In honor of my 5000th post today, I thought I'd try to post a positive thread!

This has been such a difficult year, I've been looking forward to Christmas for months, thinking "By Christmas a lot of this bad stuff will be behind us."

My husband has been gone all of November, on another continent doing a dangerous job - I'm SO glad he's safely home!

My sister, who is fighting for her life, has also been looking forward to the holidays - she keeps saying she will be doing considerably better "by Christmas."

My long exhausting trips to Texas are over for this year - shouldn't be any more funerals there and no more difficult surgeries for loved ones - at least not this year (I hope). No more leaving behind my husband and 11-year-old for emergency trips to Texas... no more this year anyway.

And in the holidays we have the new year... and all the hope that next year will be better!

Is anybody else really looking forward to the holidays this year? Let the festivities begin!

I am !

I'm off both Christmas and the day after Christmas this year because I changed jobs. So I'm happy about that! I might even put up a small tree.

I definitely love the Christmas season. I love the music, I love the decorations, I love the traffic around the shopping areas, all of it. All we're missing is the snow.

And keep in mind I'm one of Santa's elves. Or maybe one of his reindeer, since I deliver the toys to the stores.

My MIL has Christmas with us every other year, and she is coming this year. She and I get along great and both like to have a little wine now and then (my husband doesn't really ever drink) so it's the perfect excuse for the opening of a few wine bottles over the holidays!

I am definately looking forward to christmas this year since last year I wasn't able to spend it with my family!!

This year it will be everyone that I am close to, including my fiance which makes it fantastic. Having everyone that I love in one place and all gathered together to share good times with just makes my heart happy, and it's no lie...I can't wait.

No.... I don't have family here, so I will probably be home watching TV... It is not a happy time for me, that's for sure

Aw, I'm really sorry to hear that. I know spending Christmas alone can be tough.

I spent about six of them alone, and no kidding - one Christmas morning all I had to eat was coffee and rice. One year I decided to make Christmas what I wanted it to be instead of what it was supposed to be. It was a day off of work to me. I refused to give gifts or put up a tree. Lost a few friends doing it that way, but it was okay. I pretty much ignored Christmas and told everyone who'd listen that Christmas should come every two years, lol!

My point is, maybe you want to spend Christmas watching DVDs and hanging out with your cats. Maybe going for a long walk and treating yourself to a bubble bath is a nice day. Cook yourself a nice dinner - put on some music and have a glass of wine. Maybe if you do what you want to do instead of what society expects, it will turn out to be a pretty good day.

Best advice I've heard. I've spent Christmas alone, and I just did what made ME happy. It was my own gift to me.

Last year I just could not get into the X-mas spirit but hopefully I will this year. I made gingerbread last night so that's a start!

I haven't really gotten into it this year, it seems too early yet. I have received two presents already though! I will be unemployed as of Christmas Day, so I'm actually looking forward to that.
This year will be a different one, that's for sure. I just hope the snow holds off until Christmas Eve.

SwampWitch, that was great advice! Make it what you want indeed.
I actually wonder about those of other religions to whom Christmas must seem like an enforced participation in a foreign culture. You can't excape it in the Western world.

Yeah... I get it... I have been doing it for 13 years... I was raised Catholic, in Brasil, where Christmas is HUGE, a BIG family event... I am talking about extended family traveling from all over the country to meet at grandmas for Christmas... So not having that is sad... There is no way to romanticize it...
It was my choice to come here though, and It is something I need to put up with every year.... So I do it. There is nothing nice about watching tv and eating alone when I know my family is together overseas.
But life goes on, the holidays will pass... at least I have my SS package to look forward to - that I do
. And my kitties... They make me happy

Sorry to hear that, but you are not alone. I do not look forward to it, to many negative things have happened this time of year for me and my wife too. And at the moment, my personal life has hit a low. But, I have my cats that keep me happy and my spirits up.
