I live on ground floor, and Pollýanna often sits outside below the kitchen window, and if she wants to come in through the main door, she meows at me there and I open for her. This side of the house faces the street (quiet one way street with speed limit 18,6 miles/hour - according to my convertor...) To get to the other side (where the garden is, and her window) she has to pass some houses, since I live in the old part of ReykjavÃ:censor:k, and the houses here are joined together.

Anyway...I was tidying up in the kitchen and I saw some (5 or 6) guys around 20 years old, with wild ugly hairdo and ugly t-shirts. I think they came from next door, where a girl their age lives that acts like a social center and throws cigarettes from her balcony into our garden.

I wasn´t really noticing these guys, they seemed to be just fooling around, on the sidewalk and on the street and on the sidewalk again... Then, when I heard a catbell going back and forth past my window, I realized they were saying "where did she go" "go get her"...They were running around, cornering someone, looking under the parked cars, running again...

I realized that Pollýanna wasn´t home, but after a minute she came rrrrrrunnning in the living room window (facing the garden), so afraid wiht her tail puffed. She was so afraid that I haven´t been able to catch her (and we are best friends), she ran straight under the sofa, then came out again and again and looked out the window wery afraid like she was expecting to be followed, and everytime I tried to get near her, she ran under the sofa or under the coffee table. I have tried to give her her favorite treat to eat, but she won´t toutch it, I have tried to comb her, which she loves, but she won´t let me. She is even afraid of Feykirófa, to whom she is the superior.
I am sooooo mad
To think that anyone would do that to my Pollýanna, my very best friend. Maybe this wasn´t the first time or the last they do this kind of thing to a cat, maybe next time they will cause the cat to run out to the street without thinking and get hit by a car.

Sorry, this wasn´t supposed to be that long, I am just sssssoooooooo mmmmmmmaaaaaaaad. I felt like running after these fellows and tell them off.

Thank God she is safe! Sounds like maybe you might want to keep her in for a while. Can you make a complaint or talk to the boys? I'd be worried about what they might do in the future.

Yes, I think I should keep her safe inside for a while. To bad that I am going out of town to our summerhouse tomorrow, just for the day though.
I don´t think I can make a complaint, since I don´t really know who they are. I just THINK they came from next door, they are like this girl next door´s kind (luckily those people just rent that appartment temporarily while the owners are studying abroad), but I really am worried about what they might do in the future.

A cat that I had as a kid got attacked by some kids, that covered him with a raincoat and battered with a wooden stick. Those were young boys, and that was 25 years ago. I thought people were getting more aware of pets now, but....

I would be really mad too, and I WOULD NOT tolerate that kind of behavior!!!!
I think you should try to talk to either the police or the humane society about how you saw your cat being mistreated. Even if you don't know who these people are, they might be trouble makers that the police are very familiar with. If these kids get away with mistreating animals, they will eventually mistreat people.

Also, I just want to suggest that maybe you could train Pollyanna to go outside wearing a harness and leash. That way you could be outside with her and make sure she is safe.

If you own your home, another alternative would be to either buy or build a nice outdoor cat enclosure.

Poor you and poor kittie! That REAAAALLY infuriates me!!!

Anyone who gets ANY pleasure out of hurting ANY animal is a VERY baaaad person. You should try to do something...now your kittie wont be safe aslong as they are around....but be carefull they might get mad and retaliate...GRRR...some people make me so

Good luck and sending kittie protection vibes and prayers

Yes, that entered my mind also, that if I actually would run out and give them a piece of my mind, or even just tell them calmly how this cat was one of the most important person in my life, and this wasn´t nice to do to any cat, they would maybe go out of their way to terrorize Pollýanna whenever they could.

Thanx for the vibes and prayers

I wish I could do something, but the police would probably laugh at me!!!

At first I wanted to train Pollýanna to wear a leash, and I really did try. We lived then on the 5th floor, so this was the only way she could go out, and she knew nothing else. But NO WAY! She would not let me dicide where she would go!!! So she just stood still and if I tried to let her walk, she put all four feet down so I would have to drag her! (This was actually quite funny
)

We only own a forth of the house (there are four floors, one flat on each floor), so I couldn´t make a cat enclosure, but when we more somewhere bigger... I don´t know anyone in Iceland that has one though, do you know where you can get instuctions how to make one?

Thanx Val, she is feeling better now. She ate her treat, wich was brought to her bed, and has crawled in her basket to sleep. She has not spoken to me yet though.

No, people just own their separate flats, but once I was a witness to the cigarette throwing, and asked those kids to stop it, and they very politely apologized (at that time I had at least 60 butts in the garden), but they have not completely stopped, so we are so mean that we have thrown then back into their garden
If they don´t stop though I´m gonna buy a cheap ashtray and ring their bell, hope the parents come to the door and ask them to rather put their butts in there, than in my garden. I am sure the parents don´t know about this.
And about the fire...the grass is never dry enough to get on fire. We have a sprinkler system from Heaven!

Sesselja,
I'm so sorry that you had to go through that! Poor Pollyanna! I do hope that she's ok and not haunted by what happened. That just really makes me mad that those guys would do that!
I know that I would not have been able to keep my mouth shut! I would have given them hell about it, but like someone said earlier it might cause problems later on. Hopefully those scum bags won't be back...if so, I'd be watching them!

Please give the lil girl a treat or two from me and a big belly rub too!

Awww the poor kitty. I hope they never get another opportunity to scare her again. It makes me so angry to hear about cruel cowards like that.

Here's a webpage with some pictures of a home-made cat enclosure. http://www.geocities.com/holmescathy...enclosure.html
Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to send an email requesting building instructions.
