I got a little rescue of sorts at the end of October, and overall she has been doing well - but she has severe allergies. I've had her put on prescription hypo-allergenic cat food, and she's had a cortizone shot, which had produced improvement for about a week. The vet said to give her Benadryl if the allergy symptoms rise again.

Well - yesterday I felt a bit sorry for her (she really doesn't seem to like this food much) and I gave her a little bite of turkey. Big mistake - she's been sneezing for 24 hours now. I'm not sure at this point if it was the poultry or some airborne trigger, although the former has the stronger correlation. How long is an allergic reaction in a cat supposed to last anyway?

So about Benadryl - she's only 8 1/2lb, so I can't give her more than 4mg - which means getting the children's liquid. But the children's liquid is flavored. I'm not sure what effect grape or bubble gum flavor has on a cat. Is it safe to give the children's liquid to a cat?

No online advice can replace direct veterinary intervention. I HIGHLY suggest discussing this concern with your vet...
Red number 40 or FDC #40 is a common allergy of cats , check the label for it ...

you may want to ask about this one which I keep on hand for emergencies ... I choose it After a discussion with MY Vet

May I ask what food the vet has her on?

dry or wet or both?

I think it's okay to give the children's liquid to a cat and I doubt that it would cause an allergic reaction. But to be on the safe side you should check with your vet.
I always buy the adult Benadryl for the animals and break the pill in half and give it to them like that. It's a small pill so it's pretty easy. You can also crush it and mix it with food.

I'm not sure how long an allergic reaction should last but I would think it would go away fairly quickly ones the allergen is out of the system. If it doesn't go away I would call the vet.

Please don't give your cat anything that you are not sure of. My cat growing up had allergies and asthma and eating things he shouldn't could cause a life threatening asthma attack in him. It doesn't sound like your cat has the same thing but it's better to stay on the safe side. I'm sure you know that though.

Good luck with the kitty.

She's doing a lot better since yesterday, so I guess the turkey must be out of her system. At some point I have to get a blood test to find out what she's allergic to, but that's $150 - something I can't do for a few months. I knew fish was a common allergen, but really didn't suspect poultry - that lesson has been learned. It's also looking like she has a dust allergy - I notice she started sneezing when she sat on the windowsill, which had dust on it.

I was looking at the dye free liquid too. The vet explicitly recommended OTC Benadryl, but not a particular formulation. The 25mg tabs I have are way too much for my cat, so I'm thinking children's dye-free liquid.
