I have a memory foam mattress, but I didn't think it was soft enough so I bought a mattress topper for it. If I had it to do over again, I would buy a nice soft pillow top mattress.
One of the best suggestions - go look at beds in person and shoo the sales person away.
You can read online as much as you want, but each person will have their own preference so you need to see things in person.
I'm not sure if you can get a plain coil mattress in a higher coil count without any pillow tops on it.
I do know that you don't want to go for a very low count... they just do not feel right.
The problem with quite a few of the pillow top mattresses is that the pillow top is only on one side.
I just got back from the furniture store not too long ago, and came home and did some research, and thats what I found. They did have regular coil matresses there.
But what was the coil count on them? Around here all I see are ones that have 300 or so. Those are terrible for two people - I always end up falling into DH's indention on his side of the bed. Snuggling is one thing, but being stuck is quite another.
I currently have a Lady Americana model. One of the ones that's more popular in Europe, I think? It was an after model one where they changed fabric and the name - it was one of the elite models that usually sells for around $1500. I like it and I have back problems.
Before DH and I got this bed we had a regular coil one (low coil count) + memory foam toppers. The bed was bad, the memory foam toppers helped but it still was not enough support for my back and joints. I had an incident with my right SI joint (joints connecting the pelvis to the spine) that between the inflammation and poor support left me barely able to walk for 19 days. Other times I'd try to roll over and one of my joints would sublax (painful!).
I also had the problem with DH sinking his side in and that would make me slide towards him so much that I couldn't roll out when asleep. I always joke that I was getting suck into and stuck in his gravitational pull (look up how large objects, like planets, bend space around them).
We have this problem on other cheap beds.
So whatever you do, try to at least get something that feels like it supports you. Make sure you can roll over and sit up easily.
I hope you can find a good sale on a quality bed, too! Beds are so expensive, but we spend so much time in them that scrimping in this area can be bad.
I love it and haven't had a problem with it since getting it. I love having no pressure points, I don't feel DH moving as much, and really the only complaint is finding sheets that fit how deep the mattress is
I bought a LOVELY memory foam mattress from Overstock.com about 18 mos ago. It's so nice, perfectly comfy and is holding up really well. I love it because I didn't have to pay sales tax, and it shipped to my door for $2.95! It was easy to unwrap and put in place by myself.
Ashley furiniture here in town is having a great sale on beds right now. I can get a regular Simmons Eurotop coil spring for $350.00, or I can get a Beautyrest plush for $450.00. They also have a Sealy Eurotop coilspring for $420.00.
Good luck choosing! I hate having to get a new mattress. We've had to do it twice, and it always seems like such a big decision. We went with coil and pillow top - but Chris is rigiht - finding sheets that were deep enough was a problem.
That sounds like some great sales! Go hang out there for an hour or so testing beds. The have lunch or dinner - make a weird date out of it.
My bed's only around 18" so I can usually find some sheets. They're almost always $50+ but at least quality ones will last. I did get lucky and find a set of Cannon flannel sheets on sale last year for $24.99. They're decent quality and not like the really cheap ones.
I really want to go back, my son went with me last night, and said he wouldn't go with me again, cuz I took so long! Hubby can sleep on anything so he won't go along to help me decide!
