If you're looking for a decent brand that will last a while and doesn't cost too much, check into the SanDisk Sansa models.

I think the answer will going to depends if you want a gadget big like and Ipod or something more small like a Ipod Nano, of course the capacity is more small meanwhile the gadget is more small...

The nat´s recomendation is great too...

I have an IPOD Nano.....and I can't speak enough to how great it is.

The battery lasts forever. I can go days without charging it (I use it while at work since I work in the computer tech industry).

It also holds a ton of music.

IMO it's inexpensive for what it accomplishes.
Good luck!!

I agree with all that was said before me. What I will add is that once you find one you think will fit your needs, do a little reseach online with reviews by actual users to see if there are any little problems with the device that may not be obvious. Here are three places to check reviews by actual users and industry pros:

http://www.consumersearch.com/mp3-players
Consumer Search is wonderful because it gives you pricing information, availability information, and several review sources in one place.

http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/
The CNET site has many featurs like an mp3 finder where you plug in the minimum requirements you want and it gives you a list of mp3 players that fit them. It also has numerous videos showing the features of mp3 players and how to use them.

http://www.testfreaks.com/mediaplayers/
Test Freaks is great because there are many (sometimes hundreds) of actual user reviews (not expert reviews), and they can be ranked by whatever category you chose. I love this site.

I have used these sites for research in the past and really thought they were helpful. Hope these help!

I have an ipod touch, I'd never buy it if it was up to me but it was a gift..
I absolutely love it, the only downside is that it can't be used as a phone..
I read my ebooks on it, read the news, check my email (it can even open word and powerpoint files and my entire campus has free wireless for students so it works out really well), listen to online radio, talk to my friends on AIM and any other messanger, check facebook....
Ever since I started using it, I haven't been carrying my laptop around with me, which is great because I carry enough stuff as it is..
Before I had the ipod touch, I had my music on my phone with a 4 gb microsd memory card..I liked it that way because I didnt' have to carry two things, both phone and ipod..

I've been thinking about getting an MP3 player too and I have a really stupid question- how do you get the music on it?
I know how the iPod works, my sister has one, but any other player? how does the music get on there?
Yes, totally showing my complete lack of technical knowledge here

DOS.... now that is something I haven't heard in a long while! I remember taking DOS in college!

As for MP3 or Ipods.. We don't have one but DH and I want one!! My stereo has an Ipod base, so I think it can be used to record music.

Most mp3 players will play a variety of mp3 formats such as straight .mp3 (which stands for MPEG Audio Layer III) or .wma (windows media audio) and some like ipods of all sizes use the format of .aac (which stands for advanced audio coding). So depending on the mp3 player you have, let's say a Sony model vs. an iPod model, you will need to get your music in the format that is supported by the player you have.

So if you go to the iTunes store and you buy The Best of Elvis Presley Volumn 37, you will have those songs in the .aac format and you can play those songs on any iPod or any apple device. But those will not play on most standard mp3 models (standard meaning basically anything that's NOT an apple product).

Now let's say you go to Amazon.com and you buy The Best of the Greatful Dead Volume 5 you will get those songs in .mp3 format and you can play those on any mp3 player that is not an iPod or Apple product.

The reason for these differences is that Apple wants to maintain strict control over licensing of music and in order to do this they use a format that is not compatible with any other mp3 player. The other manufacturers, like Sony or SanDisk do not care about music licensing, they only want to sell mp3 players, and so these players will play any type of music except those formatted for the iPod and/or Apple products.

As to how to physically get the song on to the player it is pretty straight forward. In reality your mp3 player is nothing more than a fancy flash drive. So you plug it into your computer (desktop or laptop) either directly or with a small USB cord and then you can drag and drop the songs into the player using Windows Explorer. With the iPod, depending on your model, you will dedicate one computer to be your home base for your device and from there you can add and delete music.

You can also take CD's that you currently own and convert them into .mp3's using free software such as RealPlayer or Windows Media. Once you've converted these to the .mp3 format then you can put these on your player as well. If you have an iPod you can still convert the CD's you have using iTunes and move them to your player from there.

I have the iphone 3gs and it is a phone and an mp3 player, I can access the web, check email, it has calenders, gps. Not to mention the other tons of things you can do. All I have to carry with me is the phone.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to simplify the many things we carry around with us

I remember DOS hahaha

C:\\DOS
C:\\DOS\\RUN
RUN\\DOS\\RUN

Sorry...I couldn't resist

I have a little 8GB Ipod. I really like it. Since I have a Mac, they both communicate really well with each other. I tried to get a phillips Mp3 player when I had my windows vista laptop, but walmart didn't have it in stock and so I ended up with the apple.

You can get music a variety of ways both legal and illegal.

If you have a collection of cd's at home, you can rip the music from your cd's onto your computer and from your computer to your mp3 player. You can also borrow cd's from your friends and rip the music.

You can download songs from a file sharing program like limewire, but it is not exactly legal.

You can purchase songs from Itunes or Amazon or any variety of other services which is legal.
