No online advice can replace direct veterinary intervention. If you suspect that your cat may be ill, please contact your vet immediately. You are welcome to look for advice in the health forum while waiting for that appointment, but never delay proper veterinary care waiting for Internet advice. Remember that cats, and especially kittens, are very adept in keeping pain to themselves and delaying treatment may cause irreversible damage.

IMO this is not an overreaction.... from the original post at 2am this morning:
Well this is just great. I finally got Beeba home yesterday. He had struvite crystals, was on a cath for a day and a half, flushed, poked, prodded the whole nine yards. $700 vet bill. Double ouch!
IMO, if he is not eating the prescription, and went through ALL this, yes, clearly the vet needs to be contacted prior to any change of plan... Sharky is not saying to the OP to run to the ER - all she is saying is contact the VET for advice since this is prescription, and part of the treatment... that's all. It hasn't been a week since he left the hospital... He left Yesterday. And if I am not mistaken, this is strike #2 both UTIs, crystal events very close together...

No "change in plan" has been suggested. On the contrary, much support has been given for how to implement the vet's suggested treatment.

Just reading this thread.... I don't think Mschauer was suggesting that Farleyv do anything in conflict with the vet's advice, but only following the direction of the thread in reciting her personal experiences and in responding to Farleyv's questions. Also, Farleyv has been very clear in all her posts that she's staying in close contact with her vet.

I think everyone's on the same page here.

Farleyv, I hope Beeba's appetite continues to pick up and he begins eating his prescription wet food with gusto SOON!!

I have a boy who is on C/D dry, I can not afford the C/D wet. He had crystals so bad he had to have the surgery, no flare ups when he is on C/D. He gets 1/4 cup of C/D in the morning, and 1/4 can of non prescrition food at night. I would be find just feeding him the C/D dry, but he loooves wet. I just make sure that the wet I give him is low in mag, I also mix alot of water in his wet.

Another thought: My vet carries several flavors of C/D wet (dry too), there is fish, chicken, and origional, Bear liked the fishy ones best and the consistency wasn't so sticky like the origional one. The origional one was the one that he least liked.

I hope your baby feels better soon! Has he eaten any more of it today? Maybe your vet could give you a sample of the dry to try, I know my vet probably would. All of mine LOVE the dry, I use a little for treats, lol.

that is a great idea to ask about ... one never knows if the vet has sample sizes

Not sure if they have sample sizes but, you know they have cats with crystal overnight all the time, so there is a open bag somewhere, lol.

He has not eaten any of this food on his own. Yesterday, I spoon fed it to him. He had to get something in him. Felt bad doing it. Don't think I would like someone shoving a food I hated down his throat. Looking into CD dry today.

Ya know, they can send men to the moon, why can't these food companies make something palatable for cats that absolutely HAVE to have perscription food. Beeba won't even go to that end of the livingroom where the food is.

I just mixed some leftover turkey and a little chicken broth together. He is now suspicious of that ! Heck, if he don't want it, I may eat it!
Hope everyone had a filling turkey day!

Jamie had a UTI and struvite crystals last December, and has been on a prescription diet ever since. He's a dry food fan, but I've always insisted that he eat one meal of wet food a day. Since he's a very finicky eater who likes a lot of variety, he's been getting a combination of different Rx foods, both wet and dry, to prevent crystals. With my vets' permission, he's getting RC Urinary dry, Hill's c/d dry, plus 2 German Rx dry foods for struvite crystals in the morning, and 4 different Rx wet foods (three German/European, plus RC urinary in two different flavors). So far, so good.

Both vets don't have a problem with various Rx foods being fed, even mixed together for meals, as long as the ph is fine and there's no evidence of new crystals. Perhaps your vet could make some further feeding suggestions, and Beeba will find something he likes. I've been getting a urinalysis done every three or four months to make sure the "mix" is still doing the trick.

Wow, you have quite a system there! Anything that work is what I say. I seem to be leaning toward a mixture of dry and wet. Of course, won't do anything with out talking to vet.

I know by reading all the posts that this thing can be conquered. I just fed him again with a rubber spoon. He took a good deal, but also got some nasty wet pieces down the sleeve of my robe!

It is more help than I can tell everyone to hear all the stories and success you have had with this thing. It bolsters my spirits when I read how everyone else was in pretty much the same boat.

We'll see what Dr. says today.

exchanged for c/d wet. She gave me chicken and seafood flavors. Not happy that one is seafood. Started with the chicken flavor. Left it by him for an hour where he was sleeping. Nothing. So, fed him again with the spoon. He has to eat and I have no choice but to feed him.

I don't hold out much hope for this. If no interest in the food by tomorrow, I am going to ask for c/d dry. I'm hoping he will eat that.

He is not a fan of wet food to begin with. Add that to the fact this stuff must be lousy tasting.

I am trying to stay positive. Do I face a lifetime of spoon feeding him?

ANY canned food should work in helping crystals. So go to the store and purchase several different brands or flavors and see which one your cat prefers.

No online advice can replace direct veterinary intervention.

Information given by posters here are not based on your petâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s full history, and are by people who most likely do not have a degree in veterinary medicine. There are many home remedies, as well as approved veterinary treatments for cat health problems that may work for one cat, but be lethal for another cat. Please discuss any potential treatments with your vet first to ensure you are treating the right problem, and not potentially making it worse.

Farleyv, I know you're going to talk with your vet, maybe you could ask him about this, too.

If you do have to take a step back and feed kibble again, maybe you could then do a nice slow transition, one set to Beeba's pace. There are several tips for transitioning cats to canned food here and here. If you print these off (if you're interested in trying them, of course), you could then get your vet's thoughts on them.

Being a cat owner is wicked trying sometimes, isn't it? *shakes head sadly*

those tips may also help with the RX food which obviously is not quite to Beeba's liking..Realize many cats are ultimately too stubborn for a transition

Hiya, Sharky!

I was actually talking about the prescription food (no assumptions, my friend
).

Cats can be stubborn, but that's no reason not to try, is it? It's our responsibility as "pet parents" to do at least that much to ensure they get the best care possible.

Besides, Farleyv sounds to me like a person who's willing to take on a challenge, especially if it's for the well-being of Beeba - even if the challenge is Beeba himself.

I was not really assuming just getting a bit more specific

Of course I am all for trying
... lol at the challenge .. Cats are definitely good at giving those

I think Animal Planet should have a new show, "Feline Challenge". We would all compete to solve a feline prob.

I know I'd watch!
