It just the "little somethings" that do it. Like for instance, the old public school in Edmonton, KY. Just an old building, slowly falling apart.

But, add the vultures nesting in the chimneys, and somehow, it becomes a little creepy.

There's a building in the next town over that has the same architecture but was refurbished to be a residence. For some reason, I always had the chills when I drove past it. Then I learned that a murder-suicide occurred there a few weeks ago. That doesn't help the goose-bumps.

It looks like a psychiatric hospital from the 60s, more than a school

^Close enough to the same thing sometimes.

There was this house that we always drove passed in either Gary or Calumet (OK) - the thing was very weird looking because the windows made the front of the house look like it had eyes.

Nice shot.

I love exploring old, abandon buildings.

The vulture guards the spirits of teachers past, who roam the old school, looking for their lost bodies.

I did when I was younger but learned my lesson.
1) Saw something kind of odd so I decided to get a closer look. It should have been an abandoned house but someone was using it for something (everything boarded and locked tight except upper windows). There was a strong cat urine like scent... Probably should have reported it.

2) Found a really really old home that at one time would have maybe three rooms - most of the walls had fallen over/out.. All of the trees growing around it were young, very thin and straight. It made the place look creepy (why we stopped in the first place) - later I realized it was because it reminded me of the intro to Tales From the Darkside.

I found a couple of old soda bottles and a jar there and picked them up to take with me. I had a very bad migraine (couldn't see or walk) come on suddenly and it went away within minutes of leaving. Either there was something in the air or I made something mad.

I wish I had some pictures of the place, though. It just didn't look right.

Lesson: You might find scary people or things..

Me too!!! I loved exploring old buildings when I was like 10, went around the neighborhood...
And in one, there were needles and syranges and used condoms ...
It was actually an abandoned building that used to be a monastery a loong time ago, I lived in a rural area and this was out of town limits...It made it all the more spooky and I liked to imagine that I'm hunting for aliens or something, like in the X files
I was really expecting to find a ghost or something though and I was really excited (this was in Bulgaria, not in the states)
I'd have been in trouble if my parents knew I wasn't at the playground...

Good Grief!!! Took a look at that pic and thought that was the school I went to - then noticed the lot is way different. They tore our old school down because it was getting too dangerous to use - was built in 1908 and the foundation and basement were cracking and buckling - and replaced it with mobile classrooms.

Glad you liked it! Strange_wings is right, though -- Noel has encountered a lot of frightening situations on his travels, and it scares me silly that it's always nighttime, and he's usually alone on his shoots.

One time when I went with him, we heard something overhead and realized we were disturbing a colony of bats.

(Actually, that's ME exiting the premises. Noel wasn't going to let the bats stop him, so I had to come back and help him lightpaint the place. Forced bravery.)

There is a bit of a running gag around the little town; that it would cost more to relocate the ghosts than tearing down the old buildings around town would be worth.

Another thing in abundance in that area is wooden decked one-lane bridges.

Nice picture, I love creepy places.
I think the windows look very creepy too, like for a second you think you saw something/someone move in there..

I hope he's at least checking these places out before hand in the daylight. It would be bad if he were to go through a floor somewhere!

And I've encountered a house full of bats, too. As long as you don't run or move fast you'll be fine - they can track and avoid you when flying. If you move to fast they then they may run into you.
What's disturbing, though, is to see a bad alone on the ground that the other bats won't go near - definitely sick.

I have a couple pictures I'll post as soon as I can find them. I'll put more on my list of future photo expeditions.

Old bridges have a different vibe than abandon buildings...
still exciting, just different.
Wood train trestles have their own kind of beauty too.
Bring on the photos.
