PETA flyer I received in the mail - Page 2

I have never heard of PETA and too afraid to google it, sound just awful. I just know I gave 5 needy cats a home, 3 of them were from rescue centres and everyone else on this forum that has done the same has made a difference however how small it may seem. Please lets not think about PETA but about our own cats and how much we love them and how lucky WE are to have them. xx

I think most of us are for the ethical treatment of animals - we just differ on the extreme nature that PeTA will take that too and their definition of what falls under ethical treatment

I did think there was anyone left in the world... consider yourself one of the lucky ones .

They think of themselves as an animal rights organization (just like greenpeace).

Is it the Animal Liberation Front? (can't remember if that is their real name or not). I'm sure they've done things in the UK - they are the nut-jobs that throw red paint on people's fur coats, etc.

A.k.a. the PETA members in disguise

Mmmm, People Eating Tasty Animals

We're practically global here at TCS...we should start a worldwide common sense animal ethics group.

Most here agree as well, that is called Animal Welfare. PETA is just a radical group, who makes money off of people who love animals, but use that money to take away our rights to humanely live with them. PETA runs no shelter, they kill over 90% of the animals they take in and they offer no low cost spay/neuter programs to assist people who can not afford to do so. HSUS is along there with them, same with API. Most of these groups believe it is better for your cats to be destroyed, than to live with you in a loving home. They believe that pets are cruelty to animals. And in my case, since I own exotics, I am a HUGE target for these useless groups.

PETA is a radical group that I do not support. They are extremists and are NOT what they seem on the outside and support radical agendas that I do not, for instance, eliminating keeping any animals at all as pets.
It says a lot that I don't support PETA, as I am pretty much vegetarian, and am big into treating all animals with the best care and respect, including our environment/nature.

My thoughts exactly! I am SO with you there.. I would love to see an animal welfare group that actually helps animals, and I would love to be part of something like that.

World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Not crazy.

Actually help animals.

WSPA’s vision is of a world where animal welfare matters, and animal cruelty ends.

WSPA has been promoting animal welfare for more than 25 years. Our work is concentrated in regions of the world where few, if any, measures exist to protect animals.

WSPA’s work is focused on four priority animal welfare areas:

* Companion animals – responsible pet ownership, humane stray management and cruelty prevention.
* Commercial exploitation of wildlife – intensive farming and the cruel management and killing of wild animals for food or by-products.
* Farm animals – intensive farming, long distance transport and slaughter of animals for food.
* Disaster management – providing care to animals suffering as a result of man-made or natural disasters, and thereby protecting people’s livelihoods.

Our mission: to build a global animal welfare movement.

With consultative status at the United Nations and the Council of Europe, WSPA is the world‘s largest alliance of animal welfare societies.
The are focused on humanity towards animals - so while not specifically against slaughter (for instance) they do try to encourage proper & cruelty-free techniques.

They are also the people, for instance, who ran in after the tsunami to protect pets & wildlife, and tried valiantly to help with the zoo animals during the early years of the Iraq war.

The WSPA has a charity rating of only 44% - not my idea of a great charity, despite their positive aims

Over 22% of their funds raised are used on just fundraising expenses, not including general administrative expenses, yet they are spending more than their fundraising brings in

Despite the aims of a charity, you have to see how good they are at actually meeting those aims, especially before giving them any monetary backing

I'd smack my sister with a shoe too if I found her living and pooping in my food storage areas...so, that's equal treatment, really...just saying...

What's your definition of ethical though? If it involves humane treatment of animals, welfare and reasonable care of pets and other animals then we're all on the same page. I think we're all for that. But if you mean that ethical = no exploitation (no meat, no fur, no pets, no exhibitions, no breeding), then you're right, you're in for a BIG debate. I think a lot of people get rights and welfare mixed up though. I all for animal welfare but NOT animal rights!
