Hi all,

I really appreciate your advice/wisdom. I have a nearly 5 month old kitten that was spayed 6 days ago. After the surgery, she has been totally fine, being her really hyper self and eating like normal. Over the past 2 days (Since Saturday morning), however, I have noticed that she hasn't touched her food. Last night, I gave her 4 little treats to see if she would eat them. She did, and about 1.5-2 hours later, she vomited.

At this point I became seriously worried that she had something wrong with her and I took her to the vet today. They really didn't do much.. did an examination and bloodwork. They said both were normal. He did mention feeling a large feces mass at one point in the examination. They recommended x-rays but I wanted to see if she'd recover on her own before spending another $140 on top of the $120 exam. They sent me home with some antibiotics. They did give her a saline injection under the skin as well.

When I got home, I gave her 1 little treat and the prescribed dosage (orally) of antibiotics. A little under an hour later, she vomited, twice. I called the vet back and he said to let her rest for a while and give her more antibiotics in the evening. She is still not eating or drinking.

I'm starting to get really worried for her as it's now been over 2.5 days without eating. I think I *may* have seen her drinking once, but I am pretty sure she hasn't been drinking either. I am thinking that maybe she does need an x-ray, as maybe she has some kind of obstruction. I'm torn between giving her the antibiotics and a day or so to see if she starts to recover or if I should take her back to the vet ASAP (although a different vet that doesn't cost nearly as much) and have an x-ray done.

Anyone experience something like this before? What would you do? Thanks!

I would get the x-ray.
Not eating can quickly become very dangerous.
And the vomitting after eating could very well be a blockage that the vet felt.

I agree with Sharky. With the symptoms you've described (not eating for over two days and vomiting), there is definitely something wrong and it's likely only going to get worse.

NOT trying to be melodramatic, but some things can go wrong very, very quickly, and these symptoms match some of those things. Five month old kittens are notorious for swallowing all kinds of stuff (just like babies).

I might even be inclined to take your cat to an emergency vet, rather than wait until tomorrow.

Please let us know what happens after you take the kitty in!

Thanks for all your advice - I've got another appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning where they will do an x-ray. I'll be sure to post when I hear from them.

IMO that is an Emergency situation and I would suggest taking this kitten to the ER vet if at all possible. If you can at all, IMHO I would not wait until tomorrow... It sounds to me this kitten has been obstructed, and that is very VERY serious.

Just a quick update:

At about 8:20 PM eastern tonight she ate some canned food for the first time I know of in the last 2.5-3 days. Soon after, she became extremely hyper (like her normal self), and ever since she has been acting like usual. I gave her a dose of antibiotics at about 10 PM. At around 10:30 PM, she ate more canned food (about 2x as much as she did at 8:20). 2+ hours later and she hasn't vomited after eating or getting the antibiotics so that's a positive improvement from earlier. She just took a hour-long nap but seems to still be pretty active and normal after waking up. She hasn't passed any feces yet, though. I figure the telling sign as to whether she has an obstruction or not is whether she moves her bowels. I was wondering if maybe she had some sort of bug (she had a temp of 102.8) and the small dose of antibiotics she received earlier gave her enough relief to start eating.

Would you guys still advise getting her in for an x-ray urgently even if she continues eating and moves her bowels?

I certainly don't think she needs any emergency treatment, I'd say it just took the meds a little bit to kick in.
that she keeps improving!
