I do want them to have collars, but really only for the cuteness factor. I've find some great ones online.
But what guarantee do you have that if one of your cats escapes, he will be returned because of the chip? With no collar to notify someone of the chip, a person may just assume he is a stray and will adopt him and perhaps move away without ever knowing the animal contains an ID chip.

I'm just saying that if you put on a collar for the cuteness factor, be sure to put on a nametag too.

What guarantee do you have that the breakaway collar won't breakaway?

Many cats that come into the shelter have no collars, and when collected (from microchip scan) the owners say they had a collar.

I've had past cats collared, they always lost them in the house so I can't imagine why that would be any different outdoors.

We try to keep collars on everyone, especially M.K. (since she's indoor/outdoor) which usually means we're rotating them from cats that never go out to her. I'm a firm believer in break away collars, so I'm quite happy to just keep buying them as she looses them (plus we just get the hyper-reflective collars from the dollar store)

Right now Tasha (the one conveniently outside right now) is the only cat with a collar on. Oscar is too little (well maybe not any more) and M.K. & Peaches took theirs off awhile ago.
My Granny once told me that if God had wanted cats to have collars, they would have been born with one. I think collars look OK on dogs but are not appropriate at all for cats. Let me say that both my cats are chipped even though they have never ever been out of this house. Cats just don't want any
collars on and I want my cats to be natural cats. We have many stairs in this house with bannister railings for a cat to hang himself on and the breakaway collars just don't always work as I have sadly read here on TCS.

all of my cats wear collars with tags and are microchipped. two of them tend to lose them but i always get a replacement. i use reflective breakaway collars. the indoor/outdoor cats wear them because it identifies them as having a home and because the collar reflects in headlights making them easy to see at night. the indoor cats wear them because someday they might get out (again) and get lost. i think it's indoor cats that need id more than outdoor cats because they are far more likely to not find their way home.
collars help too if your cat gets killed outside. i check dead cats for collars whenever possible. at least you won't be left wondering

I think mine are entertained by theirs
They each have a bell, they're like walking cat toy sounds.

All my cats wear breakaway collars and they also are microchipped. They're all indoor cats.
Once in a while one will loose a collar but I usually find it on the floor later.
Most of them are embroidered collars with my phone number. I found if I used a hanging tag they would get caught on things a lot more often. The ones who don't have embroidered collars have a nameplate type tag (a CollarTag from Boomerang Tags.)

My cats both currently do not have collars on.They are indoor only cats.

Berlin had one on and it stayed on,until I got Anja.Anja took the collar right off Berlin's neck! I never bothered putting it back on...yet.I will eventually, with tags.Anja has a really skinny neck,so I have to wait until she beefs up abit before a collar will stay on her.

I want them to have collars and tags, because I lost my beloved cat,Hatchet. He got out once and he HAD a collar and tag,but somedays I took it off.The day he got out,it was not on and I never seen him again! I wonder if his tag was on if things would be different.

Jamie, an indoor cat who goes outside in a harness/leash combination every day, wears a reflective breakaway collar with a name tag and a tag saying he's microchipped. He's got the collar, the chip, and ear tattoos. Miezi is an indoor/outdoor cat who is microchipped and tattooed. She gets rid of collars within 5 minutes of going outside, so we've given up on that.

No, I hate petting them and feeling the collar.

they are indoor only. I also live in an apartment building so my door goes to a hall not a main door. So i feel safe. I have them handy in emergency (fire etc.) to put on them quickly. I also put them on when I go to the vet.

No collars here. All are indoor-kitties.
They do have microchips, 3 have them because you can't go to a show or breed with a cat that isn't identified with a chip, one has it because you can't import a cat without a chip to this country and one has it because the vet gave the chipping for the whole litter free so he was chipped before I got him.

another good point, I've read too many tragic tales of the collars not breaking away some close calls where it happened inside with owners around, others don't end well at all

I had to get the right collar to get Marmalade to keep it on. Bast insisted the bell be removed from her collar. Loud Mouth got used to it quite easily. Marmalade could tell her collar was different from my other cat's collars and kept loosing them until I finally got a collar that was just like my other cats.

the dog has a collar that she came with... I have NOT had a collar on a cat since Zoey turned up allergic... Mine are indoor and the two most likely to escape are chipped, vet and I discussed chipping the others but decided against it

Two great things about dollar store collars:

- they are CHEAP!
- they break if you look at them funny

Mine don't. With my first two cats, I tried to keep collars on them, but they kept losing them. For my current cats I have never even tried.

Once my Merfy (now deceased) got out and was lost for 24 hours. After that all my cats have had collars.

Isosceles has had the same collar since he grew into it. (about two years) Sedna has only had hers for the past two months since she's new. I picked collars that match their personalities.
They look weird to me when I take them off for grooming.

Yes my cat wears a collar. I'm paranoid that she may get outside and someone may not realize she's micro-chipped. Hers has come off a few times. I also like the bell so I can hear her. However, I can only hear it if she runs otherwise it doesn't jingle at all.

In the past I did have two kitties (siblings) that absolutely freaked out when I tried to put collars on them. So needless to say they never wore collars.

My kitties do not have collars. I still need to microchip Tibi & Juju, but Quil came from the HS with a chip.

I have thought about collars with ID tags, but do they rub off the fur around their necks after time?

I also worry more about them catching their collars on something inside & it not "breaking away", then them getting outside.
