Because I was just petting Miss Kitty & thinking about the fact she's once again lost her collar, here is a question for everyone: Do your cats wear collars?

Are they indoor or outdoor cats? Why or why not?

We try to keep collars on everyone, especially M.K. (since she's indoor/outdoor) which usually means we're rotating them from cats that never go out to her. I'm a firm believer in break away collars, so I'm quite happy to just keep buying them as she looses them (plus we just get the hyper-reflective collars from the dollar store)

Right now Tasha (the one conveniently outside right now) is the only cat with a collar on. Oscar is too little (well maybe not any more) and M.K. & Peaches took theirs off awhile ago.

Siren wears one. I put on on her as soon as she was big enough. Its a breakaway type with a small tag with her name and my phone number. She is an indoor 10 week old kitten. I first put it on her at about 8 weeks when she could wear a 7" with just a little slack. I mainly got it for the little bell. She has the habit of walking right under me and going under my chairs. This way I can hear where she is and not step on her.... ...again.

When I first put it on she tried to pull it off for about a day, mainly when the bell jingled. after that she never bothered with it. Also she has never got it snagged on anything yet.

An emphatic YES! Even for my indoor only kitty.

You never know when an indoor only cat may escape. Microchips are great, but unless they are wearing a collar to inform the world they are chipped, no one may ever think to have him/her scanned for one. I keep a nametag on both my cats with their name and my cell number. Dusty has lost her collar twice. She's my in/out cat. Both times I got the collar back because the homeowner found it in her yard. Both times Dusty was fine, but she got in a little dust up with another neighborhood cat! From my point of view a collar with a nametag is cheap insurance.

Mine don't they are inside cats that don't try to escape, the show cats can't wear collars as it leaves marks around the neck. They are microchipped (required by law).

funny, I was just thinking about this, I have a history of not putting collars on my cats, the reason is kind of silly, but I allways thought of it kind of like an ownership thing, ie you put collars on dogs to show you own them (and to keep them safe)..but who can truly own a cat

But..as we will be moving soon, and I have to take a long car trip (2 days!) with Autumn, then introduce her to her now house, I did put a collar on her, just so she will be used to it for the move. She does have a microchip, but I want her tags in plain sight too just in case.

Anyway, its pretty cute, pink with skulls and crossbones... I had to take the bell off though to keep her and me from going nuts!

Cats are indoor/outdoor and do not wear collars. The older ones used to wear flea collars but one developed an allergy so I stopped. The younger ones seem to hate anything around their necks.

Rosalie wears one but only when she goes out to use the bathroom that way it's easier to keep tabs on her, other than that no. Zoey's still too small for one.

My 3 black kitties all have orange collars. They're all indoors, but we put collars on them anyway - partially because if any of them ever sneak out, the collar will signify they are someone's pets! Nero and Hoshi have the same orange collar - when I went to find one for Neko they didn't have the same one anymore, so he has orange with silver paw prints

All 3 also have bells, so we can hear them around the house.

My kittens do not wear collars at home. They are both indoor. We are planning to get them collar and put them on when we go to vet visits, just in case.

I keep a collar on Sushi, 7month old indoor kitty. He keeps on sneeking out of the house when ever somebody opens the door.

When he was 4 months old he snuck out one night and I found him at 3am in the neighbors yard. So I put on a med sized bell that has a on his collar so when he tries to sneak out we can hear him running.

Luci doesn't wear a collar. When he gets mad he rips his collar off so I don't bother putting it on him.

We don't put a collar on Sully either.

8 indoor cats, all except the 3 kittens wear collars only because they are still too small and can slip them off over their head. I make them wear collars in case anyone does get out on accident. Where I live there is a huge stray/feral problem and I know alot of people that will shoot at strange cats on their property. I'm hoping that someone might see the collar before they shoot. Thankfully I have 2 doors leading to outside so the chances of anyone escaping is slim but better safe than sorry.

I don't keep collars on the cats or the dogs. I have a friend who keeps collars on her cats. She says they are naked without them!

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Mine all wear collars including the dog but they are basically their bling bling. Lol gigi has a pink one and the boys have matching blue ones. Hercules hates his collar and constantly tries to take it off but I won't let him he looks handsome with his collar on.

funny that this was the first post i saw when i got on here cause I just ordered everybody brand new collars as x-mas gifts. When i lived with my parents we never put collars on our cats but when i moved in with my hubby (b/f at the time) and his roommate i started to put collars on my cats. Roommate was not very observant, drunk a lot, & had numerous people in and out of the place so for the kitties sake i put collars with bells and tags on them. I only use collars by the company Premier and are called Twice as Nice. They are not only break away safety snap but they are also made from stretch elastic. Once in a blue moon i find a collar in the middle of the living room after some rough playing. I love these collars

My girls would freak if I tried to put a collar on them. They are indoor kitties and do not go outside. The one time Rusty bolted out the door she went about 2 feet to the frozen dirt, and then bolted back in. She hasn't tried that again! Dusty just likes to look outside.

All kitties freak when you first put a collar on them. Most get over it in about 10 minutes! To me it is just an extra layer of safety. I've read too many threads about indoor cats who NEVER go outside, but find a way to bolt out the door one day. The anguish felt by their human is heartbreaking. Collars with nametags are just a little cheap insurance. It may never pay off, but then again, you just never know.

I had to take the bell of Miss Kitty's collar because when she had it on she was a very unhappy kitty! She only caught 2 mice all week! Poor girl
. She doesn't need the bell anyway she comes meowing every time you call!

My Riki (
) used to stalk around with one shoulder clamped over her bell so she could sneak up on birds - SMART KITTY!!!!! It was hilarious.

I hadn't thought of it but I am constantly tripping over Oscar - I should get him a bell!! -duh-

My indoor-only rescues wear their collars, my two purebreds refuse, so they are microchipped. My outdoor rescue wears a collar 24/7, and she has never attempted to take it off (I think it helps her feel like she belongs.

Nope. All three of mine are indoors and microchipped, so that gives me some piece of mind if they were to sneak out.

I do want them to have collars, but really only for the cuteness factor. I've find some great ones online.

All three of my kitties do wear collars
. However, they have also all been microchipped. I live in a suburban area with many busy streets close by and I like the security of having my cats both microchipped and wearing collars stating that they are chipped (the collars also have their name tags including my phone number and the words reward if found on the bottom).

I was initially very against putting collars on cats since I had only experienced cats who were terrified of their collars and would be beside themselves with panic and worry if wearing one. But, that being said, I always liked the idea of being able to pick out cute little collars for my kitties. I randomly was playing with Cassidy shortly after I first brought her home and put my dog's puppy collar on her to see how she'd react and her response was to flop down on the floor and bat around one of her favorite toys. So, with her seeming willingness, I went out and bought her an adorable safety release collar (with a bell which did not bother her (or me!) one bit). I did the same thing with each of my other cats and they, too, didn't mind wearing a collar. Now all of my kitties have an assortment of cute collars to wear and I have the peace of mind to know that should they get out, I have a good chance of having them returned to me.
