My two girls hardly ever shed. I might notice a hair after I've been petting them, but they just don't seem to shed much. Even when I brush them, not much comes off.

I hadn't even really thought about it, but I pet somebody else's cat the other day, and there was hair flying all over the place. It dawned on me then that my cats don't really shed.

They're both young (4 months and 6 months), and it's Fall so it's obviously getting colder. Do kittens just not shed? They have good diets, the vet even asked me what I fed them because their coats were so glossy and smooth. I'm just curious why they don't shed more. I guess I shouldn't complain, I can wear a black shirt, hug my cream colored (pointed) cats, and not have to change, lol.

Different coat types can shed more, and sometimes kittens (younger ones) won't really shed much due to not having a more mature coat. Stress can also make some cats shed a bit more - anyone who's ever held their cat(s) at the vet will have noticed this.

Underlying illness can even contribute to it.

I'd say you're lucky. It sounds like you found a food that works well for both of them. And even though they're not shedding much you're grooming them anyways!

I have two sleeker DSHs that don't shed as much. They're coat types make them feel smooth - satin like.

Most kittens will not really shed till about their 10-12 month

Mine , at 12-13wks, still shed but their coats are getting better. They were probably eating spilled dog food and bugs... so their coats were very very rough (crinkly fur + tons of flea dirt). They felt more like those green scouring pads used for dishes than kittens!
A pretty good example of what a bad diet can do to any cat's fur.

Thanks for the replies!

I assumed it was because of a good diet (I feed Natural Life wet food) and them being kittens.

Lua, 6 months, has a longer coat, I guess she'd be classified as a DMH. It's VERY soft, and has the texture/appearance of a velveteern stuffed animal.

And Bailey, 4 months, has short sleek fur. It's also very shiney, and almost has an opalescent shine like tinsel in the right light.

They're PRECIOUS! Too cute. Shedding issues, as stated by many above, don't become an issue until around the year mark.

My boy with the shortest coat hardly ever sheds. My long hair actually sheds the least out of any (though lots of under coat comes out with the furminator). My DSH, who has a pretty thick undercoat, SHEDS. Everything he lays on gets a lovely orange/white fur layer. In my experience, shedding has a lot to do with the undercoat rather than the top coat.

Anyway, know you already have your answers, but really just wanted to tell you how cute they were!!!

They are SO cute!

I think it varies by cat-- mine are both DSH but one never ever sheds and the other I'll see lots of hair from-- both eat the same food.

Pepper is 7 months and a DMH and no shedding at this point--only time I find gray hair is after she plays rough with the boys.
