The Colorpoint Short Hair

So, I am watching the new Cats 101 and they are showing a breed called Color point Short hair. Problem is, it looks like the siamese, it meows like the siamese, it acts like the siamese, it is vocal like the siamese, it got the eyes of the siamese... and it is pointed - But it is NOT an Siamese? So, What is the difference and why would I want this cat instead of a siamese? They said it is its own CFA breed - can anybody help me to make sense of that?

Thanks Sharky, I am sorry... I still don't get it... IMHO what a waste of time.
Here we are, discussing all the time, what we call "designer breeds", or the need of some other breeds that breeders come up with... And ... I am just in shock that there is a whole BREED - and the only difference is different pointed colors for the Siamese, which is already a pointed cat!
Don't get it, and IMO someone must pulled some nice little string inside CFA for this one because it does not make sense to me...

I can understand the Oriental being another Breed from the Siamese, Oriental Solid, Siamese Pointed.

I can understand the same level of differentiation used between the Persian and Himmies....

But then you explain to me Differentiating a Pointed Siamese from another Pointed Siamese, oh, but lets just call this type of pointing an entire different breed - and that is acceptable? I mean, why not just calling the different colors, just like the other breeds? Just like This breed itself, for that matter?

I think sometimes there are issues with adding new colours, or patterns.

CFA only has a few colours, over here we have over 65 colour variations all under Siamese. We don't have Colourpoint Shorthairs. Seems they've been around for a long time, I wouldn't label them as designer.

I think it's a case of purists and what they have been mated to. Similar to the pointed persian/exotic debate. I think it's silly, IMO.

You know CFA is like that.
They allow Sphynx but not Peterbalds or Don Juan Sphynx.

What is the Don Juan Sphynx? I can't find anything on them?

Another name for it is Donsky.

Ok... But genetically there is one difference that could mean a lot though... The bald gene of the Donsky is Dominant, while on the Sphynx it is recessive... For a breeder that might be quite advantageous IMO, ETA: and the Donsky is trully hairless, and is native from Russia, so they are different breeds... Why CFA wouldn't take it them? That is weird!

For the Colorpoint Shorthair and the Siamese, they are both pointed Siamese... just different
colors...

Yeah - new every week now!
Tonight's episode, you can probably find a repeat - Colorpoint Shorthair, American Curl, Somali Japanese Bobtail, Birman - and they forgot to list, but the exotic too!!!

ETA - it was actually a pretty good show... good information in it... With good ideas with toys for owners to put cats to work for their food, build scratching posts and maximize spaces... they are getting creative at the show and talking more about cat ownership too, adoption, health, caring... It's pretty cool actually.

Yeah - I think they have been back for a few weeks now, and they have been better than before... more informative, IMO. Haven't seen things like "M" for maine Coon type of things
They are bringing on cool rescues, cool people who knows their stuff. Today I though it was good... They featured the tabby place rescue that is just soooo heartwarming

In reality its a Siamese. In CFA they call it a separate breed because the Siamese purists didn't want any other color point on the Siamese other then the 4 traditional colors of seal, blue, chocolate, lilac.

The red gene and tabby gene was introduced thru other cats, and so CFA said "its a separate breed now". Even if the standard is exactly the same as a Siamese other then the point color.

In TICA and ACFA they are Siamese (any color point) - you can mix/match what colors you want together. Therefore the red, cream, tortie (seal, chocolate, etc), lynx points (tabby points) are all just different color points in the Siamese breed.

CFA did the same to the Balinese/Javenese cats (longhair Siamese). The 4 colors are Balinese; any other color point are Javenese.

BTW - about the show (haven't seen it but heard about it). Don't take ALL what they say about breeds on that show to be true - they have many incorrect statements! One person did ask a question regarding the show's statement "you can tell what is a Maine Coon by the "M" on the forehead - stands for Maine Coon......................LMBO. That is so incorrect (1) M is the markings of a tabby cat (any breed/mix) and (2) there are solid and calico, etc Maine Coons that do not have an M on them!

Of course I don't take all in the show as the truth - I saw the M thing, and I quoted earlier in this thread... it was ridiculous
But it seems they really got better... The people they are inviting (not the regulars, necessarily, although they are decent) are pretty interesting.... Last night They had this lady, Ingrid, who had neat Ideas about space utilization, and making the kitties "hunt" for their food - she was really creative... I do think, like with anything, that the show is getting better with time - that is all I am saying... First season was so so, this time around IMO is much improved. I have not noticed anything like the "M" thing yet

Maybe the show had a lot of "corrections" in emails and have done a little more research before they present it as "fact".

I remember at one cat show: there was a person with a lovely cameo Maine Coon benched near us. I overheard them telling the person........"oh cameos are very rare in the Maine Coons - only like 10 of them registered" I had to bite my tongue as a good friend of mine breeds them (she specializes in cameos and silvers) and she almost fell off her chair at how "rare" her cats are!

And this same person told them that Cornish Rex cats were crossed with sheep to get the curly fur! He was dead serious about his statements - not joking. I handed them a flyer I had made for my Rexes to tell them the truth about the breed.

OHHH believe me, I had to bite my tongue till the couple got to my cage so I could correct them! But you should have seen my friend's face about the cameos - even better!
