If Nostradamus and the Mayans "predicted" the end of the world in 2012, is this something we should believe? What do you guys believe? I mean, just because the Mayans chose to end their calander on December 21, 2012, does that necessarily mean that the world as we know it will end that day?

My boyfriends dad believes it will be another "Noah's Arc" type deal, only he truly believes that NOBODY will survive this. Some people think that some will survive, others think nobody will.

I'm not sure I can accept that the world will really end, or that we will experience cataclysms that will devistate the world. However, I think it IS possible, because it has happened before.

What are your thoughts on this?
The best selling book by far in the world right now is "The Lost Symbol" written by Dan Brown, author of the Da Vinci code, the biggest selling book in the last 100 years. Everybody I know is reading this book. I have finished it and know what is going to happen on that date. I suggest you read this book which will probably be bigger than even The Da Vinci code.
Yes, something BIG will happen on that date but it is something to be happy about and nothing to fear. Read the book!

I always keep wondering which timezone are people talking about when a certain date is told to be the last one. Will it just be the one that reaches that date/time first or what..?

The DaVinci Code and The Lost Symbol are novels, not fact, but fiction. Dan Brown took little bits of history, myth, etc, and wove a compelling story. There are many historical errors, and a ton of extrapolation. I don't even think Dan Brown thinks they should be taken as fact.

Whether it was the best selling book of the last 100 years or not (and I couldn't find a list...I looked out of curiosity ) doesn't have any bearing on the veracity of the story.

The Mayans had certain numbers that they felt were significant and they applied those numbers to cycles of days (like how we have weeks) and also cycles of years (like how we have decades). What I heard (and bear in mind, it's been years, so it's possible I'm slightly misremembering and I can't possibly give a link) is that on what we call December 21, 2012, all the cycles will be lined back up for the first time since their calendar started, so December 22 would be called something like "Cycle 2, Day 1" if there were still Mayans.

That has always been my understanding as well. Its not at END to the calendar (or the world). Just like our calendars end in December, then we start over with a new one in January

I've always wondered that too Does that mean Australia will end before North America?

When the ENTIRE earth is gone - its ALL gone in one instant - not in parts.

And buy Christmas presents - just give them the day before

I think the point is, if it turns 12am on December 21st...will the world start ending in Australia because it turns December 21st there first? But then not end here until 19 hours later? (or however long it is)

The only thing I ever read myself is that there is a giant asteroid expected to return in 2012. I learned that this summer at a space centre.

I am too busy to worry about such things to the point of any real stress or life altering activities. I am at peace with my place here. But I do think it is interesting, about as interesting as I find aliens, the Loch Ness monster, ghosts, and Big Foot. Love that stuff! And totally admire the Mayan culture.

Exactly. There is the slogan Save our Planet. Our planet is an awesome force and has went through mass changes for all of its long life. What we really need to do at this point is try to save ourselves from our own destruction of our home, we lost respect, and plain common sense as a mass society. The planet will go on, with, or without us.

I'm one of those that believe's the verse, "Which one of you can add even a day to your life by worrying?"

Since I have read both books and since they say novel on the cover I realize they are novels but are based on some thought that many people had never considered before. In the Da Vinci code it was the picture of The Last Supper. How many people suspected there were not only MEN in the picture before the novel? And now as a result of that novel how many people have went and studied that picture and had their minds changed after closely examining a picture they had never given much thought to before? Even more startling are some thoughts in the novel "The Lost Symbol" but the one about 2012 should make people think happy thoughts because again, even though it is a novel it presents something much more thought provoking that I will not give away here, that they had probably never thought closely at all about before. The first 500 pages of The Lost Symbol is strictly a novel albeit has some very thought provoking questions about a certain secret group of people that do exist, in fact our first president was one. But the last ten pages ceases to be a novel and presents arguments that could change your thoughts about God, the Bible and the Universe or at least make you think about them as you probably never have before.

And I welcome 2012.

I remember there has been several catastrophies predicted that never happened. Y2K is one. All computers were supposed to shut down in the world. Did it happen? Nope!

In the 60's, California was supposed to have a huge earthquake and fall off into the ocean. There was supposed to be a new coastline, not to far from where I live. Did that happen? Nope! In fact, the type is was supposed to happen, (they had it timed to the minute) my whole family were at the beach in Cayucas, CA. My brother had his watch out and was counting down the minutes. He was disappointed it did not happen! LOL

No one but God knows when this world will end!

a very interesting book to read that touches on that subject and a lot of other very interesting stuff is 'Fingerprints of the Gods' by Graham Hancock. it's quite an eyeopener. another book along the same lines is
'Forbidden Archeology', don't remember the authors right now. but it's amazing how much 'history' is altered, especially if an archeologist name is established and his/her findings are proven wrong years later but swept under the carpet so to speak

Egyptian history is all at the hands of one man - Zahi Hawas. If he doesn't like your theory, you don't dig in Egypt. Even if you can excavate, you can't take it with you, and he ultimately has the say on what you are even allowed to talk about with what you discovered.

I think it was Graham Hancock has some very interesting theories about ancient Egypt, but Zahi Hawas doesn't like him or his theories so he is routinely denied access to parts that are already excavated to either prove or disprove his ideas. Go figure.

This whole 2012 thing is interesting, but I doubt anything will actually happen. We weren't freaked out about the Y2K stuff either since both of us were pretty "up" on computers (before the norm was to have personal computers), and besides we knew that if it ticked over in Oz and planes didn't fall from the sky then the rest of the world would be fine too. Guess what? It was.

As opposed to my sister and her husband - they exchanged flak jackets and gas masks for Christmas in 1999. How romantic. They didn't even know what they were afraid of, they had just heard all about the end of the world as we know it and were "prepared." Seriously paranoid.

Hey, if it all comes to an end in 2012 then it does. What can we do about it? Same as if it all comes to an end tomorrow. It is what it is. Live like you were dying and you'll never have any regrets.

It's my personal belief that the world will cease to exist as we know it some day, but there's only one entity that knows just when it will occur.

2012, Y2K, and all those other doomsday theories are interesting, but I personally don't worry about any of them. When my time is up, it's up. There's nothing I can do about it, so I try to live my life accordingly. There are enough other things in life to worry about w/o worrying over when or if the world may come to an end.

The world will end. Our planet and all others in our solar system. Our star, the Sun, will go nova and fry all in its path.
Will this happen on 2012, no.
Unless I missed a memo we will not all die on 2012, though party people like its Y2K!

Our Sun doesn't have the mass to go supernova but the Sun could end up swallowing up the Earth as a red giant. Even if the planet wasn't engulfed by the Sun, life would die off due to the extreme increase in temperature. Give it another five billion years or so.
