December 21, 2012--What do you think?

This is a topic that is very interesting to me, and has only recently been brought to my attention. I just saw the movie a few days ago. I loike to watch the History Channel too and they have a few specials about this.

If Nostradamus and the Mayans "predicted" the end of the world in 2012, is this something we should believe? What do you guys believe? I mean, just because the Mayans chose to end their calander on December 21, 2012, does that necessarily mean that the world as we know it will end that day?

My boyfriends dad believes it will be another "Noah's Arc" type deal, only he truly believes that NOBODY will survive this. Some people think that some will survive, others think nobody will.

I'm not sure I can accept that the world will really end, or that we will experience cataclysms that will devistate the world. However, I think it IS possible, because it has happened before.

What are your thoughts on this?

Being a Christian, I believe only God knows when the world will end. I try to stay away from those programs. Don't need something else to worry about!

If it's true, there is nothing we can do about it anyway. Just live a good life and try to do the right thing.

What else can we do?

We watched the movie too - AWESOME special affects - was pretty cool, but we don't buy the story for a min.

There is ONLY one person that knows the end of this world (completely) and he's not about to tell us the date. No person on earth, past or present or future knows that date

In all honesty, my guess is that the Mayans ran out of symbols to use for a calendar, and that is merely the date they planned to start over.

I am with Mike here. I think people over-analyse things. It is probably something as simple as running out of symbols.

I read an article where the Mayan descendants aren't too concerned themselves. It is a arbitrary date started from another arbitrary date.

The really scary date is 2038. That is when UNIX machine dates start having problems.

When I was a kid I wished I could see the end of the world. Now with the movie and talk on the subject I wonder if I am getting closer to my wish being granted.

ON that date I plan to wish my sister a happy 65th birthday.

I am honestly indifferent about this..It could be true that the world will end in 2012, but why spend some of my time and energy thinking about it when there is no way I'll know for sure unless I wait and see??

How many times have huge disasters been predicted and foretold that have never occured? I'm not really putting too much faith into the "world is going to end in 2012" line either.

The world could possibly end tomorrow too by some freak natural disaster.

Something I've always wondered about - why are so many people obsessed with an apocalyptic end to the earth? Not fear of it, but anticipating it.

Because they'd be dead right then!

I think it is an interesting theory that can go many different ways - I am curious to find out - but only time will tell!

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to direct it at your thread. I was thinking more of the groups like at Waco and many other sects. My BIL is totally obsessed with this and I really don't understand it

The mayans calendar is very confusing. I know they were astronomers and they based things on planetary line ups. The Earth and the Sun line up with the center of the Milky way in 2012. Some believe there will be gravitational pulls that will disrupt our planet. I don't think the world is going to end on that date.

I believe one day our Mother Earth will cleanse herself of toxins which means mankind. The earth is what supports life and we should cherish that. Instead we make weapons of mass destruction, pollute with garbage and toxic substances. If we continue down the path we are headed it doesn't take a psychic to figure out what is going to happen.

My understanding is that the "calendar runs out" thing is a huge misconception and it's more like "calendar repeats." The Mayans had certain numbers that they felt were significant and they applied those numbers to cycles of days (like how we have weeks) and also cycles of years (like how we have decades). What I heard (and bear in mind, it's been years, so it's possible I'm slightly misremembering and I can't possibly give a link) is that on what we call December 21, 2012, all the cycles will be lined back up for the first time since their calendar started, so December 22 would be called something like "Cycle 2, Day 1" if there were still Mayans.

Hopefully whatever comes along next won't be as careless or uncaring as we were.

If I recall correctly, the world was "supposed" to end in 1975, and again in 2000.

It was "supposed" to end before the end of the 1st century AD, or at least before the end of that generation; it was "supposed" to end sometime in the 600's AD, again in the 1100's, and the 1600's...and a few other times I remember hearing of but can't put a date on. Thus far, they've all gone bust.

Isn't it in 2013 the asteroid was supposed to hit us? (Actually, that was from initial estimates. Subsequent calculations say it won't come as close as the moon. We actually had a close call just two weeks ago.)

Yeah, I also heard that the Mayan calendar just ends, and then will start up again. No mystic predictions.

I love apocalyptic stuff - fiction, movies, etc. I'm also a disaster movie freak, so 2012 was exactly my cup of tea.

Since I think the whole thing is fantasy, it's really easy for me to suspend disbelief, and then you walk out of the theatre and everything's still there.

My feeling is, if the end of the world comes, it'll just happen, so I live my life as best I can, being the best person I can.

The Mayans were an extraordinary people.

I have read that they were excellent mathamaticians, their calendar is THE most accurate to date, I believe.

They were the first to understand the concept of "zero."

True! An amazing civilization. The history of the Mayans is fascinating to me.

That's no small feat. There are students taking mathematics today that can't even grasp that concept.

Have you ever been to Chichen Itza? It's an amazing place! Most of our ancestors were picking the nits off each others heads while the Mayans were building it.

To expand on this somewhat, ancient cultures were much more advanced than most people realize. A good deal of what we know and understand today was given to us by people who lived long ago- albeit with some revision. Even the Dark Ages weren't as "dark" as they are made out to be.

I don't look at the Mayan calender as ending with the end of the world, like others I see it as starting over after it reaches a certain point.

So.... if the world's going to end four days before Christmas, will anybody be buying Christmas presents?
