I was never meant to be an old cat.

I was cleaning out papers today and came across something folded up in my appointment book. I wrote it for my Cubby, who passed away in May at the age of 10. Writing it made me feel better at the time, maybe it will give someone else some peace. It's just exactly how it came out, might be better if it was cleaned up, but it is what it is.

Don't despair, dear friend,
It's not your fault.
I was simply never meant to be
an old cat.

Whether by accident
or disease,
those jumbled letters
starting with F.

Age will not
cloud my eyes,
the years will not
weaken my bones.

The path I started down
was always shorter,
borrowed time from
the beginning.

Then you stepped in
and told the inevitable,
not today,
he's mine.

Thank you for the gift,
the time
I was never supposed
to have.

Because, you see,
I was never meant
to be
an old cat.

Thank you for the kind words about the verse. I hope it helps if you've lost a younger friend.

He was a stray, about a year old when I took him in. He died from kidney problems, but not CRF. Whether it was cancer, cystic, etc, we don't really know. It overcame him quickly.

That is very lovely. Definitely does not require any "cleaning up". Thank you for sharing that.

Being a stray, you gave him a home full of love and plenty more years of life than the average stray would get I bet he loved you a lot

what a beautiful sentiment. I lost 2 to disease in 2007 and 2008. they were both only 7. you do start questioning what you did wrong. MY Nomie went quick too.... over a matter of 3 days. It was unreal.

It makes me think of my foster Tiger. The vet thought she was about 2. She just wasn't meant for this world.

Add me also.
I lost my first cats at age 1.
We also lost kittens at 2 weeks and 6 weeks of age.
Your poem is great.
Coco had 2 dead kittens years ago and I lost my Stormy and Yoshi at age 5.
I lost my Patches at age 6 on Thanksgiving Nov 26th 1998.
I hate that Thanksgiving is Nov 26th this year just like the day she died.
Dec 5th will be 2 years since Stormy was pts.
I have lost so many cats at a young age but that is what I get for saving ferals.
My sister is still very upset about Ty.
This is part of a im from today.

That is a harsh reality, especially when you have many cats or do rescue. As the years pass, more and more dates become an anniversary of a loss. I try to remember something unique about each kitty for a moment on those days, something that makes me smile about them. Not the end, although I can tell you what I did nearly every minute of those days, while I can't even tell you what I had for lunch yesterday. But their lives were so much more than the tragedy of their death, which is what I need to focus on.

bad_kitty is right, no two are alike. It's really difficult to move on, help and love the next one that needs it sometimes. But really, that's all we can do.

I keep coming back to this poem as it is so beautiful and so relevant to me. As a mommy with a cat that has severe heart disease since he was young I know Redford will not grow old. His last appointment with the cardiologist was not good. We have had several great years with his medication and are changing protocols to try to have many more. But the last visit was a shock. This poem reminds me that whatever happens (and hopefully it will be many more years) my Redford is loved and cherished and in a higher powers hands. I am on the stanza "not today, he's mine"

that is good, but sad.
sorry for your loss

Don't worry, Troant, I shouldn't have read it either (the day after Sam's death). Cried when I read it too.
