You may remember I found a dog a month ago, running loose with no collar. Several cars, including mine, almost hit her. After arguing with two animal control offices over whose jurisdiction she was in (neither wanted her), I finally took her to my own vet.

She had heartworms, Lymes, tape worms and a "cherry eye." The tape worms and cherry eye are taken care of and she is on antibiotics for the Lymes. Apparently the same antibiotic helps stop the heart worms from reproducing, thus reducing their numbers.

She was scheduled to have her heartworm treatment this Monday through Wednesday. But last week, I noticed she seemed to be getting awfully fat, so we reduced her food a little. I finally took her to the vet's today and sure enough, the poor thing is pregnant. I just wanted to cry right there in the vet's office.

The first vet (in the same practice) had originally not wanted to spay her until the heartworms were under control - he was worried about her surviving the anethesia. But this vet recommended a spay/abort. She does the spaying for a nearby clinic and said she's spayed several dogs with heartworms without a problem.

So, Sadie's heartworm treatment is on hold and she goes for her spay on Dec.1. Poor dear, she's been though so much. She needs a break!

Oh the poor dear! I'm glad she's found you, you're obviously taking very good care of her. Many vibes that all her health problems clear up quickly. Its too bad her pups have to be aborted, though I know that MORE pups is exactly what the world doesn't need right now. Its sad though

Oh that is sad about the pups. Sadie is so lucky to have you caring for. You have a good heart.

Thank you for caring.

Is Sadie still scheduled for her spay tomorrow?

Thank heaven it was you who rescued her, well done! I will have to go back and find the thread with Sadie Lou's story.

I am one who is for pregnant spays for both cats and dogs in almost every situation.

All paws crossed that everything goes smoothly.

Thanks for the vibes. She is going in first thing tomorrow morning. I really am still torn about this but I know its for the best. I am having her micro-chipped and re-tested for the heartworms, too. If we are lucky, the heart worm numbers have been reduced enough so that the treatments won't have to be so harsh.

We'll decide on that after tomorrow.

Thanks again. I will let everyone know how it goes.

I agree, going ahead with the spay was the best choice.
Sadie

A loving hug for you.
