I had posted my story in a couple of threads here but I think it deserves its own thread. This is about not giving up hope, even though I pretty much did.

My male cat Kelly got out of the house on July 20th. It couldnt have been at a worse time. I was leaving for the airport in about 5 mins the morning he got out. I did a quick search but with no luck. I did call the chip company, Home Again and reported that he was gone.
I got back late the next day and made up posters and put them on all the mailboxes in my townhome subdivision. I called our animal hospital and alerted them and also called several animal shelters. When I got home from work a few days later there was a message on my machine from a lady who saw a cat fitting the description hiding in some bushes about a block and a half away from my house. I went there daily at different times of the day but could never see him.
A few more days went by when another lady called and said she saw a cat fitting the description behind her house. She was actually able to take a picture of him. I went to her house and saw the picture. It looked a little like him but the picture was grainy so I couldnt be sure. I decided then to get a live trap from animal control. We set it up the next night. At 4:00AM the next morning she called me and said that the cat was in the trap. I ran over to her house and, to my disappointment, it wasnt my cat. I took the trap back the next day.
For the next several days I would leave the overhead garage door open overnight. I would put out food and water. Almost every morning I would check and the food was eaten. One night my son came home from work and as he pulled onto the driveway he saw a cat run out of the garage. He said he was pretty sure it was our cat.
I then decided to try the live trap again. I had to know what was eating the food even if it wasnt my cat. I baited the trap with food for 10 nights in a row and got absolutely nothing. At this point about 2 months had passed so I then began to start to lose hope. I was trying to get myself to the mind frame that I wasnt going to see my cat again because thats what I thought. But for some reason I couldnt bring myself to throw out his things. I just packed them up and put them in the garage.
As the days passed I thought about him less but I knew I would never forget him. October passed. November was passing. Then yesterday Nov 19th my phone rang at 9:45AM. I could see on the caller ID that it was our animal hospital. I figured they were calling me to remind me that my cat was overdue for his yearly shots. The vet who called identified himself and asked if I was Glenn. I said I was. He then said, "we have your cat". I almost dropped the phone, I was dumbfounded. It turns out he had made his way over to the subdivision just to the west of mine. The lady who brought him in to the vet had been feeding him for over a month but couldnt bring him in the house because her husband was allergic to cats. She could see he was friendly and on this day finally decided to take him in and see if he was chipped.
Surprisingly he had only lost 1/2 pound but did have fleas. The vet said he would treat the fleas, give him his shots and that I could pick him up later that afternoon. I picked him up and brought him home. He is eating like a horse and sleeping a lot. I know he has been thru a traumatic experience so Im going to just leave him be and let him get used to things here again at his own speed. I can tell he is still a little confused with what is going on in his life now.
So thats my story. I wanted those who have missing pets to read and know you cant give up hope like I did. I know every missing pet wont return and I thought mine was going to be one of those. But here he is, sleeping next to me on the couch.

Glen, thank you for sharing your wonderful story!
So many people post here, and give up hope too quickly. I'm so happy that you've had your happy ending, and that someone did the right thing and had your boy scanned for a chip!

I think we need a picture of Kelly to put a face with the story!

This is a great testamony to microchips, but it is still a good idea to keep a collar with a nametag that includes your cell phone number. Chances are if he had that on, you would had him home a month earlier.

I am a big believer in microchips, but because they are invisible, many people finding a stray cat will never think to have them scanned for a chip. Also, God forbid that you cat is killed by a car, you may never know if the kitty doesn't have a collar on with contact information. The body may just be scooped up and thrown away, but if there is a collar with nametag the liklihood of being notified increases dramatically!

Good advice from Dusty's Mom - except you need to make sure that it is a safety, breakaway collar b/c if he gets out again and gets snagged on something, he won't be trapped there or strangle himself trying to get loose.

ETA: hopefully, tho' - he has had enough of "outside."

oh my goodness that is WONDERFUL news!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so so happy for you and for your cat. Thank goodness he
was microchipped. My cats are chipped too .... none of them will
wear collars.

I always tell people no matter how many months pass keep doing
what you did which was to leave all his stuff like litterbox, food, water
and bed in your garage so that even if they are too scared to show
themselves, they will stick around for the food. Otherwise they
have no choice but to leave the property they live on to go look
for food and shelter. So if thats provided like you did then hopefully
they won't leave.

You were so lucky that lady brought him to a vet to be scanned.

I am so happy you have your miracle for the holidays!!

It is SO wonderful to read such a heartwarming story after seeing so many kitties in need of good forever homes. I "almost " lost my sister's cat while driving him to her home after catsitting. He was a magician (A Russian Blue perhaps he trained w the Moscow circus :-)) In any event, I stopped and my much younger (say 8) brother was with me and Tuffer (short 4 Christopher Robin) jumped out. We were a good 100 km from her then home so we of course paniced -looked everywhere and finally drove into a nearby community, had posters made at a print shop for placement by them (they were animal lover's and offered -this was PRE Quick print et al) so we had to drive to her house sans Houdini, the wild child of her 4 cats - the other 3 still in their carriers. When we arrived and I opened the back door, the first thing I felt was a wet nose, the loveliest wet nose I have EVER felt!!

A friend of mine has an even longer time of her Kitty missing! A reporter in New Brunswick Canada, she was driving to visit her parents in the province 's capital city. She had a minor accident and in the confusion, her baby managed to get out. She was perhaps just a half hr fr her destination! She too had posters made, articles written and ran classifieds. Pet detectives were almost non existent then do no grids or analysis of indoor or outdoor cats and quiet vs high energy cats et al were done. In retrospect, given what we noe know, it would make sense he did not go too far from the accident scene but we did not know those variables then.

Her persistence paid off! About a YEAR after the loss ans still in mourning g, she rec 'd a phone call fr a woman near the accident area. She told my friend she had seen the cat poster in a local corner store (I am a native of New Brunswick and like to recommend its kindness and small regional caring) . My friend was highly dubious but after this lady said she had been feeding a Kitty who looked like the one in the Pict only thinner, she drove to see for herself. By this time, the cat in question would come into the woman's porch and he had never been a snuggle bug Kitty -more of come to me on my terms. ( g.) She arrived to discover it was in fact HIM!!! So never give up!!! And in fact many personality types of cats act just like that - do not venture far and sometimes do not even come to their person. Thanks again for your story!!!

The original post is quite a few years old, but it's nice to know that reuniting stories are definitely out there!  I know a guy whose cat slipped outside and was gone for a considerable amount of time (a couple of months I believe).  They looked everywhere for him, but were never able to find him.  A couple of months later the guy was just driving along in his car, looked out the window into a parking lot, and saw a cat.  He thought "Huh, that looks like my cat!" and pulled into the lot.  Sure enough, he had found his kitty and took him home!  Such a strange, but fortunate experience!
