That was my cat last night. Sho sat on my dresser screaming for all his worth at me while I tried to sleep. At first, I thought he was yelling at a stray on the other side of the window. But when I finally opened my eyes to look, he was staring at me from the top of the dresser. For a while, I couldn't figure out what he was trying to say. Finally, I understood. He wanted off from the FRONT of the dresser by jumping onto my bed. For some odd reason, he didn't want to get down from the window like he usually does.

But the problem was he feels when the bed's covered with a blanket and human's sleeping in it, it's off-limits, so he was yowling at me for permission to jump on.
I sighed and scooted over, pulling the blankets with me for warmth and patted on the bare sheets. He immediately jumped off the dresser and onto my bed, then just as fast leaped over me and my blankets and onto 'his bed' (it's really my sister's bed, but she's not here so he took over).

Even later into the night, he felt he needed permission again and woke me up with his yowling--again.

What's funny is, he doesn't think the bed itself is off-limits, but the blankets on top of it. When I'm sleeping, he'll sometimes walk onto my pillow, the bed frame, the bare sheets, but he never ever touches the blanket. If the blanket is in the way, he'll walk around it or jump over it. It's only when I pat on the blankets that he thinks it's okay for him to be on it. In the mornings, he'll stare at me and purr from 'his bed' waiting for me to pat the blankets on top of me so he can climb onto my blanketed chest and lay down for some cuddling.

Isn't that weird? What kind of cat feels he needs permission to do anything? Anyone else have similar experiences?

What a polite young cat. He doesn't want to shock you awake.

LOL! At least he "asked permission" our old cat, Alizea, was horrible. She'd do zoomies all over the bedroom all night (including jumping from a drop cloth DH had hung on the wall down to my head!). She was a rather rude little lady, LOL!

Ichi and San could learn from your Sho. The 2 don't care who or what lays infront of them during their bed excursions. I have been trampled and jumped on a lot of times.

Awww, bless, annoying at being woken but nice that he has manners. My cats don't come on my bed as they don't like my hubby
They do if I go to bed before him but they know as soon as he puts his foot on the bottom stair and they get off (its our little secret that they come on the bed
) mind you while he is at work they all sleep on our bed during the day
xx

My Kipper is like that, too. He will put his paws up on the edge of the bed like he is bracing to jump up but won't. Instead he'll stand there like that until you notice him and pat the bed to let him know it's okay. Same with just about every other surface in the house. He doesn't make any noise though, unless he wants up to a place he can't reach by himself. He broke one of his back legs as a kitten and never recovered his ability to jump. So if he wants up on a counter, dresser, or what have you he'll stand like I described and cry loudly to be picked up and put there.

Stella could learn from Sho! She thinks it is fun to run around the bed at 4am, 5am, 6am, 7am until we finally get up at 730am!

Do you think the blanket scares Sho somehow? Is it patterned?

No, I know for sure it doesn't scare him. He gives it a few licks whenever he gets close to it. It's odd. And he'll lay on top of my blanketed chest in the morning when I give it a few pats.

@mira's_mommy: Aww... Poor Kipper. But that's really cute. ^_^
