Five hours trip with Oliver

I'm in college and I'm going home (5 hours away) next week for Thanksgiving. All my friends are going home also, so Oliver is going to have to make the trip with me. The only time I've ever taken him in the car is on 5-minute trips to the vet, so I'm worried about how he will do in the car.

I really don't want to traumatize him, or have him freaking out and distracting me while I drive. Any suggestions on how to make the trip go smoothly?

I moved with my cat, Hobbs, last summer. It was about an 8 hour drive. I kept him in a carrier and put that in the front seat and buckled it in. I talked to him when he seemed agitated to try to keep him calm. I'll admit he cried for most of the first half of the trip. At that point I stopped off to go to the bathroom and let him out and around the car for a few minutes (with me in it that is, I didn't want to risk him getting out). After awhile he went back in to the carrier and was calm for the rest of the trip. I had bought some spray Comfort Zone but had misplaced it with the move. Not sure if it would have helped. I did keep him in the carrier while I was driving though, I was too worried about him getting in the windshield or hurt if the car crashed.

I hear ya..I'm about to make a 18 hr. trip with my cat soon!...One thing is, if you know your cat dosn't like long car rides, you can talk to your vet and see if you can get some kitty tranqulizers for him. Good luck!
