Locks of Love doesn't make wigs for cancer patients....only for girls with permanent Alopecia. There are other organizations that make wigs for cancer patients, though.

There are different requirements for each organization. Some will take 8 inches, some 10 inches, and one I found will only take 12+ inches, completely untreated.....I'll bet they don't get a lot of donations. They all have different requirements about treatments as well.

I once looked them all up---because I've cut 8+ inches off twice and still haven't sent the ponytails anywhere! I have to look them up again to get the addresses.

No matter who it helps, I think it is awesome that you did that.
Those people will be happy to have your hair! I tried to grow mine, but it wasnt long enough and I didnt want to chop all of my hair off! I love your new look!

You're awesome! I did this last year, and wanted to give as much hair as possible, so I had them cut to the base of my skull. I don't look good with short hair, not at all. But it was fun to chop it off. I tried to tell the stylist that I liked the uneven hairstyle that resulted after she lopped off the ponytail, but she insisted on evening it out.

Just like to correct this misinformation.

Many of their recipients are children (not just girls) afflicted by alopecia. Boys are definitely recipients - see the gallery.

From the first paragraph of the Locks of Love website:

"Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure." emphasis added

And YAY! and THANK YOU to EVERYONE who donates ANYTHING to people or animals in need!

...and thanks to everyone for the compliments on the new "do."
I feel a little insecure without my long hair.
I'm also feeling very light headed today.

I used to have hair that long!!

I love my shorter hair but I am so upset to this day that I let anyone talk me into cutting my hair off....

It looks so much healthier short though imo, the longer your hair is the more frizzies and dead ends you have. But that is only my experience.

I am trying to let mine grow back out but now that it's been short for so long I just want to get it trimmed again...

Did it feel strange the first time you washed your hair?

That is so awesome you donated!!!
And the haircut looks awesome!!!!!!!
I'm sure that's a big difference to get used to, but must feel so nice and light now.

I used to have hair past my shoulders a few inches, but ever since I cut it it above my shoulders, I just can't stand having the weight of it - although I sure miss it during the cold winters

You're wonderful for doing this and helping the children. You will be rewarded some day altho just giving of yourself must be very rewarding for you and others who have done the same.

Well, it took like a second.
I also have to use WAY less shampoo and conditioner. I figured as much before I washed - but still got too much. It looked like I had almost NO conditioner in the palm of my hand either.

The weirdest is brushing. It just - ends - so abruptly and so QUICKLY.

It seems like it takes just as long - if not longer? - to blow dry though. I rarely blow dry my hair - but the length had enough weight to make it just "wavey" if I didn't blow dry it. I'd only do it to make it all kinda curl under when we had meetings or whatever. This took forever - I think it's because it's soooo thick now. And it does NOT want to go "under." Don't know if any of you are old enough to remember - but I look like "That Girl!"

I stand corrected, thanks for the info. I know they don't do wigs for cancer patients, because that's not considered "long-term". And there was a local little girl with Alopecia who got a wig from them, which is how I got the information. They do good work.

Good for you!!! It looks great too!

I donated my hair (not that much though; about 11") a couple years ago. I haven't let it get long enough to do it again but my step-brother has done it twice. I've always thought it as a real shame he has such beautiful hair on a man's head! But he's done good with it! I'd love to see the little girl who recieved his hair! (Dark with BEAUTIFUL curls!)

When I've had major cuts like that I've dropped my brush on the floor because I expected the hair to keep going.
I use a round brush with these holes in it that lets the air blow through when I'm blow drying. It seems to help my hair stay straighter and if I work the brush right to get the ends to curl under a bit. (A little mouse helps too) I'm no stylist though!
