...and WOW do I feel strange now. My hair hasn't been THIS short... since 1982.

It has really been needing a trim.
(I didn't blow dry it before going to get it cut):

(Sorry about pics - Gary took them with the camera phone)

After the initial chop and started to even up:

All done! (I didn't have them blow dry it - Gary needed to get home):

I feel naked!
...but other than frizzies on the ends, it was a LOT of really healthy hair (my hair is also very thick), so it should help several children!

That's an awesome thing to do. I'm about to donate my hair for the 3rd time. My hair isn't nearly as long as yours was, but I do have the 8 inches to spare.

22 inches (if you don't count about an inch at the bottom that probably isn't usable).
I donate it about every two years or so. I usually keep it longer when it's cut. I don't know what happened this time.

But yeah - it was too long.

And I'm sorry, I wrote that wrong. It's not that hair can't be "treated" - colored is OK, but bleached/highlighted is not. Here's the guidelines: http://www.locksoflove.org/donate.html. It does have to be 10 inches, though layered is OK, so long as the longest layer is 10 inches.

Wow, so if the hair has ever been color treated it's a no go? I've always thought about doing this, but I have always colored my hair. Since my hair grows slow it would take a long time to grow out the color treated hair & then grow 10 inches of hair to be cut off.

The literature at my sister's salon says 8 inches. Maybe it's a different organization than Locks of Love

Carolina, I've been sitting on my hair for a while now, and it has been SUCH a PIA. I normally have it cut only to the shoulder blades, so it doesn't take that much courage.
Just went shorter than normal this time - but I feel really good about it, because it's like donating twice!

Color treated is fine, it's just the bleach (and most highlights involve bleach) that is the problem.

It must be, because Locks of Love is 10".

I already included a link to the hair donation requirements, but here's a link to the site - they have a great photo gallery of recipients!

Awwww! What a wonderful gesture! Two of my little nieces decided to do that, but when the time came,,, the younger of the two (around 7 at the time) couldn't bear to part with her hair!
It was a sweet thought anyway.

In the snow!!!!
I have donated to Locks of Love before. I had almost 2ft cut off and my hair ended up around my jawline. It was amazing how light it felt afterwards! I walked around swishing my hair around for the rest of the day

Congrats on doing such a nice thing!

I want to say thank you and God bless you.

I am the daughter and granddaughter of two cancer survivors and although they were adults when diagnosed I know how important a wig is to a chemo patient.
