At the shelter we have a cat named Nera. She has Eye lid Agenisis (basicly her eyelids never completely formed on the top of her eyes). So she needs to have the hair frozen off from around her eyes. I made an appointment for her to have this procedure done next Tuesday. Please send vibes that she does not get sick before hand, and that all goes well.

Lots of them for dear Nera! She'll feel so much better after her procedure.

Poor baby. I've never heard of this - how does freezing off the hair from around the eyes help? (If you don't mind my asking).

Many for her to be healthy and to have a successful surgery!

I had never heard of it either. It was obvious when she came in that she had a problem with her eyes. At first we thought it was a case of rolled in eye lids, but now that i know the problem I can tell she does not have full eye lids. She was born without complete upper eye lids. In addition she was born with abnormalities to one of her optic nerves, and is blind in that eye. The specialist said this is a common occurance in cats with this condition. Since her upper eyelids are not completely formed, the hair around her eyes is constantly rubbing on and irritating her eye. Freezing the hair off stops the eye irritation and makes the cat more comfortable. There is no way to get her sight back, but it stops the irritation and protects the cornea of the eye from additional damage. She is a super sweet cat and will make someone a great pet. This is really about making her comfortable.

Best wishes to Nera to stay well and recover quickly from this nasty problem.

I was watching All Creatures Great and Small once and there was a dog the vets treated whose eye lashes were facing the wrong way and were rubbing on his eye constantly.

Hope all goes well. Many to the sweetie!

Yesterday was Nera's big day. The vet tech explained the procedure to me last night. They pluck the hair from around the eye & then freeze the follicles to make sure the hair doesn't grow back. Nera did very well. Her skin is a little pink & swollen in the area but she is doing well. Unfortunately, the vet discovered that she seems to have an infection in her gums. He told me to put her on clavamox right away and I started that last night. My guess is that she needs a dental. She has to go back in 7 - 10 days for a recheck.

\tShe is currently living in my bathroom and will be with me for about a week or two. I expected her to be groggy last night, but I was wrong. She is full of energy and really doesn't want to stay in the bathroom. When I am in the bathroom with her, she just walks around purring. With the hair removed, it is very obvious that she does not have upper eye lids. She is super sweet and will make someone a wonderful cat once she is all healed.

Awww! I'm so glad to hear she did well! Also glad to hear you're fostering her. She'll get loads of attention and a wonderful thanksgiving present; a temporary home for the holiday.

I'm so pleased all went well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the explanation - that makes a lot of sense. Did her inner eyelids form? I mean - how uncomfortable is this? I can't imagine not being able to blink! And do her eyes get dry because of it? I'm sorry for all the questions, and I hope it's not a bother, but this is a new one for me too, and it's in my nature to wonder.... I sure hope the dental fixes her all up and she heals without any problems!

She does have a lower third eye lid. It looks like she has no upper eye lid at all. Her eyes do get dry. The vet told us to use an eye ointment for lubrication, that seems to help.

The hair was probably very uncomfortable. Imagine having hairs rubbing on your eye all the time. As far as the procedure she does not seem to be bothered by it at all, but she did get a pain med shot yesterday.

No problem. This has been a learning experience for me too. I have not seen it before, but if you look up Eyelid Agenisis on the web, it comes up with all kinds of information.
