For awhile now, I've wanted 3 cats in the house. Katina has lived with my in-laws, quite happily. Nero & Hoshi are getting along great (got Hoshi in March '09). I was at the SPCA registering to get one of our ferals fixed when I saw the most adorable, crazy black male cat in one of the cages. I was taken. Rob had asked me earlier in the week what I would do if he gave me a cat for Xmas, and I said "be quite ecstatic"
He told me he of course was kidding. After seeing this black cat (named Jim Bob at the time, eek!), I kept dropping hints about getting another cat, & asking Hoshi & Nero if they wanted another brother.

Sunday night, Rob finally agreed
He told me his only conditions were that the cat was male, short haired, and black - fine by me! I have a severe soft spot for them. I especially enjoy giving them homes because it seems so few people want to - there's SO many black cats at that SPCA. [When we adopted Nero, there was a sign by his cage saying why black cats were great to adopt!].

I went to the shelter yesterday afternoon to play with him and give him the hand test (make sure he wouldn't snap at you if you touched him in certain places - he actually would get up and start rubbing me if I riled him up then tickled his stomach or grabbed around his tail!) His purr motor was in overdrive. Rob told me the decision was up to me if I wanted to bring him home that day, and he would know when he came home what I did. Of course, as soon as I hung up the phone I was at the desk ready to fill out the adoption form
They had just put him in with another adult male cat a few days ago and they had gotten along great, with no food aggression or real fighting.

Brought him home and put him in the weight room with a disposable litter pan, food and water, along with a new toy that looked similar to the one he was playing with at the shelter. He immediately hid under the weight stand in the corner, but as soon as I'd begin to pet him, he'd purr and come out and rub all over me. I left him alone for awhile, and Hoshi & Nero kept sticking their paws under the door to see who was in there. Hoshi had smelt the carrier when I brought Neko in, Nero couldn't have cared less about the box of cat! I let Rob pick out the name, and he picked Neko, since it was Japanese for cat (now we have 2 cats with Japanese names! And one Italian name).

This morning I checked on him in the room, he had eaten (and thrown up - apparently he isnt as easily adapted to the new type food so I may go buy a small bag of his shelter food to gradually mix in with the new food, or maybe stress is to be accounted for as well), as well as used his litter box. Yay! He was laying in the window when I came in - I think it's going to be one of his favorite spots. Rob went in and met him this morning (didn't want to overwhelm him last night), and he stayed in the window & loved all over Rob immediately

Tonight I'm going to swap the cats - put Hoshi & Nero in the room to smell, and let Neko explore the house a bit. I'm trying to do it the 'right' way this time - with Hoshi, I just put him in a room for an hour, introduced Nero, & let them do their thing - which is how my parents have always done it anyway with success.

Edit: Here's the shelter picture of him, I'll post up the ones I took when I get home tonight.

Welcome to TCS Neko!

Great for you adopting a black kitty.
They really are hard to get adopted out, so I am always thrilled to see people who love them.

Yey!!! Welcome home Neko!!! Congrats Tara (& Rob too!!!)!!!
Definitely grab a bag of the shelter food, and do the slow food transition - it's already a lot of stress a new home, and all... you don't want to add to it. He can have a stomach upset for up to 2-3 weeks because of this sudden food change... That would be too much on him

Good luck and congrats again - and thanks for adopting a black kitty

Neko is 1 year 7 months by the shelter's information. He's tiny for his age, I think. He was a stray and was fixed a month ago, along with all his vaccinations.

I went to the shelter to see what kind of food they are giving the cats, and they said it could be any of a number of foods - since they use the donated food it can range from 9 Lives, Iams, Alley Cat, Meow Mix, Special Kitty, etc - whatever they get. They gave me a coupon for a free 3lb bag of 9 Lives today, and talked to the vet on staff there. The vet said the huge quality difference between a cheaper food vs Science Diet could have caused the upset stomach. I'm going to pick up the bag of 9 Lives and transition.

Hoshi immediately adjusted to the SD, but I also think that fatty boy can adjust to any food
Nero was already being fed SD at the shelter when we adopted him. (And yes, I know that all cats adjust differently!
)

I'm hoping he's been okay in his 'safe room' today, I haven't introduced him to the others yet. Hoping they're bonding through the doors
I might wait until tomorrow night to bring one at a time in the room to see him. Tonight I'll put Hoshi & Nero in the weight room while I let Neko explore his new surroundings so everyone can get a smell of everything. I laid down on the floor with Nero yesterday outside the door and I could see Neko laying on the other side in the exact same position

Welcome home Neko! I gave my cat a Japanese name too. I am curious about what color Hoshi is though... since his name means 'Star'.

Hoshi is black too - all 3 of my furbabies that live with us are black
(Katina lives with the in-laws, she's a gray tabby). Star was his name when we adopted him, but we thought it was too girly for such a stout, muscular boy. He has a white "star" of fur on his chest. We looked up "Star" in different languages to give him a new name. It was between Hoshi & Asteri. He has Siamese in his blood and you can see some of the oriental wedge face, so we went with Hoshi. Plus, he seemed to like that name more

I never got a chance to upload the pic of Neko I took, got home late last night because hubby had a last minute job to do at work. I let Neko out and put Hoshi & Nero in his safe room for an hour or so to let them sniff around. Neko explored for awhile before trying to get back into his room, so we decided to introduce them one by one, supervised.

I was surprised that they did absolutely nothing
Nero was more enamored by Neko's carrier box from the SPCA, and eating the food even though he has the same exact food in the kitchen. Then he took a poop in Neko's litter box
They did play bat at each other after a few minutes. Neko tried to imitate Nero's movements in the room. Nero DID show a little bit of his "dominance" when he'd push Neko's head down from the window sill when he tried to come up, and when he pounced on him and held him down for a few seconds. There was no upsetting meows, hissing, or serious beatings.

Hoshi was more of a big tubby scaredy cat. I put him in there and he hissed at the food bowl and then rubbed on me and ignored Neko, who was rather curious as to who this next cat was. Hoshi then was more concerned with Nero playing footsies on the other side of the door
I let him out and Nero came back in to play with Neko some more. We decided to leave the door open and let them do their thing.

All cats were alive and well this morning
Nero and Hoshi were, as usual, on our bedroom floor waiting for us to wake up. After a quick search, Neko was in his 'safe room' behind the door. Hoshi came in and bumped noses with him before going to the kitchen. Before we left, Neko was exploring the house with Nero and Hoshi sitting back and watching. I think they'll get along just fine
Next is for Neko to become comfortable in the 1700sq ft of strange space he was just introduced to! Then hopefully he wont back away as much when we approach him (though as soon as we start petting him, he's in kitty heaven!)

Whew, finally! As promised, pictures of Neko at home! Been super busy with work and school, finally got a chance to sit down and upload some pictures. He had his first vet exam post-adoption today. Found out he had a tapeworm, so they gave him a topical treatment for it. Said he was extremely good and let them do their exam with little to no resistance. He's happy to be home now, though I think he went and hid for a few.

Neko & Mr. Fishy

All 3 - Furthest away is Neko, Hoshi in the middle, Nero closest to the camera:

Congratulations on the new family member, Tara! I really like that pic of the three of them all in a row - what beautiful boys.

Kudos to you and your hubby for giving these kitties a home!
