New York City - cold (30's or sometimes 20's is considered really cold). It sometimes gets to the teens, with windchills below zero, but not that often. We have a couple of snowstorms, but lately they haven't added up to much. Maybe once during the winter we'll get a big one.

Winter weather is usually December through February.

I miss Minnesota winters.
I grew up in Minnesota. There, you really know when winter hits. I really like cold weather. Throw on an extra sweater, throw on an extra quilt. Love it.

Ottawa - Cold, it is not uncommon for it to be -30...sometimes less with the windchill. Alot of freezing rain, and alot of snow.

Winter here is probably considered December - February. This year the temps have been varying between 50s-70s in November (ie: Yesterday was 77, today its supposed to be 70, last Thursday it was 49, this weekend was 70s). It cant make up its mind. No snow, rarely any ice, so we're stuck with rain when it wants to precipitate.

I miss snow and ice and slush in New Jersey
The cold without snow here stinks. We did luck out in February 2008 - it was 80º on our wedding day the first week of Feb! Last year it was in the 30s on that day

Winter (December through March) here can be a mixed bag of rain/snow/ice. SOmetimes lots of snow. Sometimes very little. Weather systems will hit us hard or miss us entirely. We've had little snow the last couple of years but got hit hard by a couple of ice storms.

Temps can range from70s down to zero - and that's in one day!
Mom often recalled the day she left for work in shirt sleeve weather and came home in a snowstorm.

Sunny and usually windy.
Daytime temps in the mid to upper 70s, overnight timps in the upper 40s fahrenheit that is.

I like to joke that we have 2 types of winter weather in East Tennessee - warm and wet or cold and dry. It seems that any time precipitation starts falling, the temp warm up above freezing, so we end up with just a cold rain. Since I've been back here (2003), I can only think of a couple of snows and even those were 1" or less. Average highs about 40-55 and lows in the 20's and 30's.

Here in cottage country I would say we consider winter from Dec-March. Generally by the first of April the snow is going. Temps can vary with the average being between -10 to -20. The coldest morning I ever remember was -52 and that was many years ago. Snowfall to varies from year to year but usually by Feb there about 4 feet of snow in the back yard. The snow banks along the side of the road are often taller then me and
i am 5'4".

Maine winter mid Nov through March..daily temps can vary mid 30s to well below zero with the wind chill -20 below at night. Alot of snow...I'm right on the coast so often it switches to sleet and iceing up which is worse then the snow..We lose power often sometimes days with no power..We have a wood stove so we stay plenty warm

Here in Lotus Land (Lower Mainland British Columbia), winter is rainy and temps don't ordinarily get more than a few degrees below freezing. It can also be quite windy. Some years there is no snow at all, and when we do get snow, it's usually no more than a couple of inches and is gone almost as soon as it arrives. Thus, we can't justify having the resources to deal with a real dump, and when we get one, it's chaos. Winter conditions tend to begin in November and go through the beginning of February. By then, the rain is lighter, the most eager trees are showing blossoms, and the spring flowers are beginning to poke up.

I'm a few hundred miles south of you, in Portland, Oregon, and it's the same here. Mostly rain and such, occasionally a few inches of snow... but then last winter.... we got slammed, Portland style (having lived in the snow belt, it wasn't a HUGE dumping, but for Portland, it was massive), and the city just ... shut ... down. I remember seeing two workers with snow plows sitting in a parking lot across from my old apartment building... this is a few days into the storm... they were just kinda scratching their heads and trying to figure out what to do.

Hmmm... plow the roads? (I know, I know, they weren't used to it, but that's what those big scoopy things on the fronts of your vehicles are for... yes, I'm a smart-aleck)

This year, I no longer own a car, am on transit, and live in a neighborhood similar to where I was in Chicago (Snow Belt was more Upstate NY, was there for two years)... I walked to the stores, used the buses... etc... so if we get dumps of snow again, I will be just fine. My old apartment complex didn't shovel/plow the hilly parking lot for nearly a week into it... no one, not even me, could get their cars out.

As for the original question... usually rainy and somewhat cold... usually in the 20's or so... maybe a few inches of snow a few times... but not much.

My weather is similiar to tierres slightly less cold tho. I would say that "normally" winter is Nov thru end of March. This year is just weird

Temps at the lowest is prolly -20 or so, without windchill. Fair amount of snow, I'd say prolly in Jan for the most of the snow...... The odd ice storm, maybe 1 or 2......

This yr has been just weird tho.... First snowfall on Oct.15.... followed by temps in the +15C range.......even now its still in the 7-10C range.

Makes me wonder what our winter is going to be like.

Yes Rigel you and your wife should plan a trip to a snowy climate some year just to get an idea of what it's like. Most people who have never experience a cold climate do find it interesting however they seem to feel the cold much more deeply then those who are born to it.

And I agree with Chris about this past year being extremely weird, infact the last several years. I hate to do one of those when I was a kid speeches but it really does apply to this subject.

When I was a kid winter seemed a lot different. Much colder during Jan and Feb. Lot's more snow then what we get now, and usually we had snow on the ground by Dec and it stayed into April.

I live in central B.C. Winter here is November-April. Temperatures range from -10 to -35 sometimes as cold as -45. Most years we get a lot of snow. last year the snow a few feet higher than the trampoline. Yes we keep the trampoline out all year, the kids shovel it off. They spend a lot of time playing outside.

I live in "central" Alberta (I think I actually qualify as Northern Alberta, but Im in denial about that is theres a fair bit to the North of me!)
Winter tends to be an October-April thing here - This is my first year where the snow didnt stick around, while the beginning of Oct. we had snow and a stretch of weather in the -10C range, it melted away before Halloween, and we've been around +10 since. Very strange to me. Temps stick around -15 to -20 for the bulk of winter, but we get a good 2 week stretch closer to -40, and all those temps are without windchill. Its cold, but its a dry cold!
In the 3+ years Ive been here, Ive seen snow every month except July and August!

Hi I live in NJ and hate the snow and ice. I love the winter other than that tho, don't mind the cold weather at all. I can live without the Summer tho.

Yeah, we got that last year, too, with pretty much the same result. Even though I grew up in Montreal and learned to drive there (in winter), I don't usually put the car on the road when a dump of that sort happens, because too many of the other drivers really haven't a clue how to drive in snow, and there's quite enough else to pay attention to without adding trying to second guess them. But I keep a book of FareSavers in my purse at all times, and can easily use transit when I need to. They actually did not too badly with ploughing here -- only main thoroughfares, of course, but it was prompt and thorough and people could get around, even if not quite the way they wanted to (and of course there were those people who expected every last side street -- or at least theirs
-- to be done).

I think you live fairly close to me so our weather is basically the same.
