OK... so I just had Bella in for her shots and to get spayed, I also thought she had ear mites but the vet said it was definitely not mites and she suspected a food allergy. She said the most common ones were beef and fish and suggested to start with eliminating fish. After hours of reading labels it seems to me that almost every food has either fish meal or a fish oil somewhere in the ingredient list. Any suggestions for both a dry and canned fish free food? Thanks

I have a fish allergy boy. It's really difficult to find food without fish or fish oils.

Right now the favorites with my fur kids are:

Wet:
Merrick - Turducken, Thanksgiving Dinner
Instinct - Duck formula, Rabbit Formula
Holistic Select - Duck and chicken formula
Wellness Healthy Indulgence Pouch - Turkey & duck Recipe

Dry:
Royal Canin Rx - Duck and Green Pea
Natural Balance - Duck and Green Pea

(Please note that the canned Natural Balance Duck and Green Pea contains fish)

Hope this helps

the canned natural balance do have salmon oil ... Technically this should not cause an allergy as proteins are responsible for that but due to manufacturing some may be in the oil

I just looked at my stock of canned foods:

All of these have no mention of fish:

Blue Buffalo(Spa) Turkey/Chicken Entree
Iams Beef
Natural Balance Chicken & Liver
Iams Lamb & Rice
Wellness Chicken

It's unfortunate, but fish has become ubiquitous in commercial products; it's smelly and has a strong taste, so cats are attracted/encouraged to eat the product, not to mention it's cheaper than real meat.

Have you thought of going raw, Bellatrix? When you buy the foods unprocessed, you know exactly what's in it, and there are a ton of benefits to offering fresh, raw foods to cats.

I know not everyone is accepting of such a diet, but I haven't brought it up in a while and thought, why not? It might be something you hadn't considered but would if it were mentioned.

Either way, I hope you find a non-allergenic food for Bella. Living with food allergies is no fun at all.

Sorry haven't been on here for a while... thank you so much for all the replies. So far the dry Natural Balance Green Pea and Chicken seems to be a hit with all three of my cats so that was fairly easy. The canned so far - the Natural Balance chicken and liver, the Soulistic chicken, the Fancy Feast flavors without gluten or fish and the Friskies prime filets chicken and turkey seem to be working for all three. It has only been two weeks so I am not sure yet. She was scratching at her ear a little bit last night but not too bad her ears look good right now but the vet treated her with ear drops when she was last there so I guess we will just keep up with the no fish thing for a while and see how it goes.
