Is this a record?

This morning I was on my way to Salem when I came across a cat in the road. It had been hit by a car, was on its chest, head up, but not moving. I stopped, picked it up with a towel and put it in a box. I went straight to the vet clinic, (which was closed) but after talking to the vet on the phone, took it home with me.

This is the 4th live cat that I've stopped and taken off the road. Most people I know say they've never seen anything other than dead animals on the road. I wonder if they don't actually look. Or maybe I just lead a charmed life.

This cat looks to be 3-5 months old. Had blood coming from both eyes, but I didn't see any other open wounds. When I administered the pain med, (orally) there was blood on the syringe. Poor guy obviously took a shot to the head. It seems alert and follows me with its eyes. Tonight I'll probably give some fluids if it hasn't taken any of the food or water, more pain med, and then to the vet in the morning. Unfortunately, if it's serious I'll likely have it put to sleep.

Four. Sigh... Is anyone else that unlucky?

Awww... poor baby... Thanks for picking him up and taking care of him - if it was not for you, it would likely suffer a horrible death

I am not sure if this is a record or not, but it seems to me you pay attention more than the other people in the area - they probably just look to the other side and go on their ways...

Don't know if it's a record, but you have a generous soul to try and help - either by making them well or ending their suffering. Thank you for that. When I was very young I saw an injured dog in the road - obviously in pain and far too injured to be saved but still alive and aware and trying to crawl out of the road. My parents wouldn't stop the car. That was over 30 years ago and I am still haunted by it. As an adult I have always kept a watchful eye out for any animal that needs my help.
I hope this little one makes it.

I took the little road warrior to the vet today. They estimate 3 months old. Other than getting whacked in the head pretty good, he didn't have any broken bones. One eye is still nearly swelled shut, several cuts and scraps, plus it looks like he skidded on his chin....but I guess if you're less than 3 pounds and tangle with a car, that's getting off easy. I asked the vet if he could have been thrown from a car, and he didn't even want to think about that.

His temp was 105, so the vet retook it. Came out even higher. So we did a combo test, which thankfully came back negative. He got a shot of Ketofen and is going on Amoxi. Covered in fleas, but nice clean ears. Weird.

He's actually eating a little, which the vet thought was amazing with that temp. The prognosis is good. I guess I'll have to come up with a name. He's solid grey with white bib and feet, short hair.

Thats wonderful of you to pick him and get him vet care. Sounds like he got off really lucky.

My husband and I once picked a solid black kitty up off the road. At first we went around it because we thought it was dead but as we drove past it lifted its head. It ended up being a very sweet little girl around five months old. She had an injured back leg and always walked a little funny. We named her Bump. It was short for speed bump since we found her in the road.

I've only seen dead animals on the road... but I live in a pretty highly populated area. Chances are if somebody gets hit on the road here they will be hit several times. Unless the original person that hit them gets out and stuff to try to save them...

I do not hit an animal that is already there just in case they are still alive. But I've never seen them move when I drive past.

You are an amazing person and a real hero. I have gotten in the habit lately of stopping and checking, when I see a kitty that's been hit (unless of course it is obviously dead) . I have not yet found one alive, but if I do, I will do as you have done and get care for the poor furbaby.

Hurray for you Cinder! (your user name always gives me a start, as my childhood dog was named Cinder
)

Yeah - I bet a nickel he got tossed. Hit by a car that small - I think would likely have killed it unless maybe it has just happened moments before you arrived on the scene.

Working in rescue makes me suspicious and jaded...and crap like this does happen.

Thank you a million times over for stopping and helping this little guy, who surely would have perished otherwise.

I wouldn't be surprised if the poor little guy got tossed. His injuries seem consistent with a couple of kittens that a woman I know rescued last winter who were thrown out of a car.

Bless you for rescuing him. He's a lucky kitty.

He's a nice little guy, still shy. He gets purring and immediately rolls over for a belly rub. Sadly, because he is tame and there were absolutely no houses close by, I'm leaning toward the possibility he was thrown from a car too.

He's thin, covered in fleas, etc. The kind of cat that his been around people, but was never taken care of.

He's looking better. I'm trying to get a picture up, but photobucket is not cooperating.

otto, I forgot to mention... Cinder was the name of my first black cat. I got him from the stray room at the shelter when he was about 4 months old. I had him for 5 months before losing him to FIP. It started a love affair with black cats. I think I have 6 now. Hmmmm... makes me wonder if I was a witch in another life. (Everyone who thought "what do you mean, another life!" fess up)
