I waited too long to get Fluffy's claws clipped, I do hers, Rocky gets his done at the vet..he is like a little vampire and WILL bite if I attempt to do his, but Fluffy usually is cooperative aboout it, this time..omg, she squirmed and squirmed, but I got all of them except for one in the back....at the very end as I tried to get the last one, she gaveme a hiss and pounced off my chest, and took off, and I haven't seen her since....I am getting pretty good at this...But there is just no way I can do Rock's...I have tried sneaking around while he is asleep, but he wakes up and just gives me that look like...."You do it, You die"

Indie has started to hurt me because he just grabs me playfully but his claws are quite sharp. He is just 7 weeks old, When can I start clipping his claws?

I would start working with Indie now. Don't push him, don't force it on him. Just start by getting him used to playing with his paws. Give him treats and/or praise when he lets you handle his paws. Introduce the clippers to him but let him just check them out the first few times you bring them out while you are messing with his paws. Go slow and make sure he's comfortable with every step.

He may be real laid back and let you do it right away without a problem. Don't try this when he's in hyper-kitten mode, but when he's being lovey or just after he wakes up.

I didn't do this when mine were little, and I seriously regret it now! Ophelia won't let me touch her paws, let alone clip nails.

He lets me do just about anything to him apart from clean his bottom, he doesn't like that.

Do I need to buy specialist clippers? I am not sure what to do.

If you've never done it before, and you have a vet appointment (was that you who has the vet appt. July 11?), I would ask him/her to show you how to clip the claws. You have to make sure not to nip the quick, which is the blood vessel/package of nerves inside the claw. If Indie has light claws look and you will see a darker part within the nail, which is the quick. It's very painful if it's nicked, and will bleed a lot.

As for tools, there are quite a few animal clippers out there, and I've also used a SHARP toenail clippers for people.

He has just been to the vets so I won't be going yet for a few weeks. Is it @ 10 weeks he has to get his shots? Can I wait till then?

Well, I haven't clipped Ophelia's claws in 3 years
and she keeps them in good shape by scratching (we offer a LOT of choices for scratching!). I would start working with Indie's paws, specifically on handling the paws, getting him used to you manipulating the claws in and out, touching the dewclaws, holding the paws still. You can certainly wait 3 weeks, as far as his claws go. As far as your comfort goes, you can do it on your own before then if those needle-claws are hurting you. Just clip off just the very tips of the claws and you should be fine, and be sure to ask the vet for pointers when you see him in 3 weeks.

Thanks for all the advice. My Indie's a good boy I am sure he will let me I am just scared of hurting him. He had an eye infection when I first got him and he let me clean his eye and put drops in it no problem.
