Hi all,

My 2 year old cat Teddy is squinting one of his eyes a lot and has some discharge coming out of the inside corner... most of it's clear, but I saw a little bit of greenish, which is making me pretty nervous.

He's an indoor cat who never goes outside and I have two other cats whose eyes are just fine. I'm taking him to the vet first thing in the morning, but I just need to talk to people on here about it and get suggestions and advice to calm my nerves.

Is this normal? What could have made this happen? He just had an entire check up at the vet about 2 weeks ago and everything was fine. I'm just really worried about it because he's my little baby

Eye infections aren't that uncommon in cats...it may be something he picked up from going to the vet. The stress of going to the vet often can cause a lowered immune system. be sure to note if he has any nasal discharge or if he is sneezing any, as that could mean he has an upper respiratory infection.

Oh & Welcome to TCS!

Thanks for the welcome

He HAS been known to sneeze often... we took him to the vet for that a couple of months ago and they said it was allergies. They gave him an allergy shot and the poor baby just slept all day, but it did seem to help. We haven't noticed him sneezing the last couple of days though.

I've noticed every now and then he'd randomly squint one of his eyes, but there was no discharge, so I didn't think anything of it. What I'm really worried about is that there might be something REALLY wrong with him... but when he had his complete exam they tested his blood and organ functions and everything was fine... I mean, if something was wrong, that's how they'd be able to tell, right? And if it was something bad, wouldn't it be contagious to my other two cats? All three of them are VERY close with each other.

And is there anything I can do to make him feel better? I've heard something about saline solution?

Thanks so much for replies... I get really scared when something might be wrong with my kitties.

I wouldn't do anything to treat him until you see the vet. You never know what's going on - on you could potentially make it worse.

My Callie gets frequent eye problems. Usually it's not conjunctivitis (eye infection) but caused by an eyelash rubbing her eyeball, or she aggravated it while rubbing the eye, or a speck of dust or something got in it, or some kind of allergic reaction. Until you get him to the vet in the morning, you can try a warm wash cloth on the eye to soothe it and try to keep the eye area dry and try not to let him rub it.

The vet should look at the eye with a scope (magnifying thing) and s/he'll probably put a drop or 2 of stuff in the eye that will stain it, temporarily. Then, they'll look at it with a special light to see if it's scratched. Callie usually comes home with a prescription eye drop and an eye lubricant that comes in a tube. She's usually good to go in a day or so. You can see her eye in this pic from a previous eye problem. (Click on it for a bigger view)

hi, my older cat, josie had an horrendous eye infection which got worse fast. they thought herpes and she had an cornea ulcer. i had to put some strong eye drops in her eye every hour for 2 weeks. it is now 99% better which the vet said is remarkable as they thought she would lose her eye.

i am sure your little one will be fine, let us know.xxx
