I am thinking about volunteering at a cat shelter. I know that the shelter has FIV cats. I just really don't know anything about FIV. So I was wondering:

If I end up handling an FIV cat, is there any possibility that I could somehow put my own cat in danger of catching it? For example, if an FIV cat bit me or even just licked me, would my own cat be at risk once I got home?

I hate to be so ignorant, but I really just don't know anything about FIV!

no, the FIV virus is not spread thru casual contact between cats, much like HIV. FIV positive and negative cats can actually live together without fear of infecting each other

No, they wouldn't... They would need to have direct contact and exchange of bodily fluids for that - fighting or mating, for example...
Now, it is always a good idea to change clothes before entering your house, same thing with the shoes, and go straight to the shower before handling the kitties in your house due to things like ringworm, for example.
There are quite a few people here who volunteer in shelters, and they can give you advices on how to do it safely.
Good luck!!

Good for you to volunteer.

The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is transmitted from cat to cat by bite wounds. Humans cannot catch FIV and humans cannot transmit it to other cats.

Questions are always welcomed.
