Had a chicken simmering low heat, as I slept last night. I do this when making soup, it never has caused any problems.
Till today, Karma came and got me.
Woke up with a cloud of white and the smoke/CO going off.
Strange things run through your mind when you think you may be soon on fire. I ran for the cat who was hiding, nice girl, you alert me when the leaves fall from the trees, but fire, hide and don't tell mommy and scratch her when she tries to get you safe
When I saw the problem I got the pot off the stove, alarm still beeping. I Grabbed my computer chair to stop the alarm and the chair fell out from under me, I landed on my bike, Ow.
Got back up as a neighbor knocked on my door, I yelled "Im OK"
The alarm is still beeping. I got it with one of Gingers toys, stick toy
I am busted up bruised. Bleeding from my shins.

Oh wow, how terrible for you. I hope you're ok, things could've been worse. Glad you're ok and kitty too.

You were really lucky that you woke up at all. How about investing in a crock pot if you're going to cook while you sleep? It would be a bit safer than leaving a pot simmering on the stove.

Oh wow. Definitely a bad start. Is the chicken a big pile of burned unrecognizable poultry?

I hope the rest of your day doesn't follow suit! And that your battle scars heal quickly and pain free!

Definitely get a crock pot. I would never leave something cooking on the stove or even in the oven like that. Glad you are ok.

Glad to hear you are alright and that you caught it in time! It could have been a bad situation if you hadn't woke up. Let's thank the guy who invented the fire alarm!!

I have quite a few mildly humorous (in the wake of potential disaster) stories. Like the time my mom left eggs boiling on the stove and fell asleep, and then woke up to exploded eggs everywhere.

The house stunk for weeks.

It certainly wasn't funny at the time, but years later I can look back and laugh at it.

Over the river and through the woods...
Wow! I'm glad everything was basically ok, except for you of course. Did the pan boil dry, or what caused? I'm always setting off the smoke alarm and filling the house when I cook. I really have to clean my oven soon...

LOL, my dad did that once (didn't fall asleep, just got preoccupied down in the basement) and my mom NEVER let him forget it! She sat there and watched while he climbed a ladder and scrapped eggs off the ceiling..."You missed a spot...there, and there and there....". I will admit, I've come close do having exploding eggs but so far so good.

I've never exploded eggs, but I've had my share of smoke-filled houses. We had two basic rules when I was growing up. #1--Joan is not allowed to leave the kitchen when anything is cooking on the stove. #2--Joan is not allowed to read a book in the kitchen when anything is cooking on the stove. You'd think after all these years I would have learned to obey the rules.

Oh my gosh I'm so glad you weren't on fire!!! When I was 15 I was trying to make scrambled eggs for breakfast, and I was alone because my parents worked on weekends at the time- I put the oil in the pan and went to my room real quick to check something, and when I came back down I saw an orange glow coming from the kitchen!! It was scary, I actually filled a pan with water and threw it at my burning breakfast, only later to figure out how stupid that was. It worked though and stopped the fire, but we had to re paint the entire house because it had ash all over the walls...

The chicken was a total loss. FUBAR. Yes all the water boiled out
I had a crocpot, had to leave it when I left Chicago to move here I so miss it!
Leaving things on low boil, an electic stove, never caused problems till today.
My back hurts really bad, the bleeding shins covered that for a bit but now, ouch, bad ouch.

Well crockpots are fairly cheap at walmart! Try checking on craigslist as well if you don't mind having used items.

I love my crockpot, but I wish I had a bigger one.

You were soooooooo lucky. Leaving things cooking like that without supervision is just beyond dangerous.
