The poor thing was just too afraid. She literally just shut down. She didn't react to anything. She refused to eat and refused to drink. We tried everything we could think of. She came here Friday afternoon and by Monday afternoon she hadn't drank anything, had only peed once and hadn't ate anything. We have been in contact with the lady who runs the shelter since we brought them home and by Monday afternoon we (meaning us and the shelter lady) decided it would be best to bring her back. She just couldn't seem to cope with the change.

As soon as she was put back into her run at the shelter, she ate, drank, used the litter box and then climbed up on the perch she was on when we got her and seemed happy. Its extremely disappointing. We really wanted to give her a home.

Sabrina (who had been in there a year longer than Pretty Girl) is doing great. She isn't ready to be social -although she was extemely so at the shelter so I know she will get that way eventually- but she out and exploring the house. She slept on my bed for a while last night.

As disappointing as the experience was with Pretty Girl, when we took her back we did not leave the shelter without a cat. We took some time getting to know several of them and ended up coming home with Flan. A shorthaired orange and white who is almost a year old. She was trapped as a four month old kitten with her litter mates and the guy that trapped them was going to shoot them. Someone talked him into taking them to the shelter and they were all adopted except for Flan.

She came home yesterday and is already settling in. She drank and took a couple of bites of food immediatly upon arrival and is already playing and coming out into the rest of the house. She does not like the dogs but they are staying away from her.

I'm sorry Pretty Girl couldn't cope. The important thing is that you tried. Sounds like Flan is right at home with you. My orange tabby "Kiki" doesn't really care for my dog either. She either avoids him or she taunts him.

Thanks for your kind words. Taking her back was realy hard on everyone. No one wanted to give up on her but short of giving her Sub-Q fluids, we had too or she was going to become to dehydrated. We couldn't even get her to show even the slightest interest in canned food.

I have rehabbed a lot of cats over the years and have never seen a cat shut down like that.

Yes Flan (who is now Mia) is doing great!

I'm sorry things didn't work out with Pretty Girl, but this is awesome that you are taking in Flan! How wonderful.
Congratulations on the new family member.

Poor Pretty Girl. Will she be able to spend her life at the shelter?

I'm glad to hear the other 2 kitties are settling in, can't wait for photos.

I had similar worries when I took in scaredy foster boy Casper. But he did take a few bites of food shortly after arrival... and now he comes running from his hiding place in "his" room ( the spare room)and meowing his head off for his meal! LOL!!!

I need to take video of him when he flops himself down on the floor, bicycles his front paws and purrs really loud. He loves scritches!!

I am sorry it didn't work with Pretty Girl.I knew a couple of rescue dogs like that, who would just shut down in a home and seemed much happier at the kennel.

But at least you brought Flan home, hopefully it works out well.

You know I've often wondered about that with the "lifers" at shelters. A cat who has been at a shelter for years, suddenly brought to a home, may feel like she's lost her home and grieve and pine.

Perhaps Pretty Girl is one of those. Not all are like that, but if the shelter is a good one, I think there are some who should be allowed to just live out their lives there.

A big welcome to Flan, Red kitties are my favorite!

Yes she can live out her life there. I definitly think that she felt the shelter was her home and that we had taken her away from the only place she felt comfortable.

Mia (Flan) on the other hand LOVES human attention and can't seem to get enough of actually having her very own humans. She is so funny. She will lay on her side and pull herself across the carpet with her claws when she is happy. And when she runs, her tail curls all the way around to the side.

Oh and Sabrina (Aretha) has been laying on my bed all day. She doesn't want messed with and I have to move slowly but she is staying on the bed with me in the room. She is getting more comfortable here.

Sorry to hear things didn't work out with Pretty Girl, sometimes they're just there too long and find the "confinement" to be comforting, it really is sad
Hopefully things go better with Flan (although sounds like they already are)

I had to do the same with a cat I adopted this past spring. She just hated it at my house because I have 3 dogs. I did the same as you, adopted another cat. My Mercedes needed a home badly, she had been cooped up in a small cage for 6-8 weeks as an owner turn in. She has settled in and bosses the dogs around.
Bless you for adopting a shelter cat.

At least Pretty Girl is in a no-kill shelter....that's the good news. You tried, that's all you can do. Good luck with the new fur family.

I posted pics pf everyone except Sabrina in the kitty picture area. Sabrina keeps getting off the bed everytime we go in there today, so I will just have to wait until she is more comfortable to get pics of her. But Mia (Flan) loves the attention.
