Best litter to get a urine sample from.

My cat has a UTI and I have cut up a plastic bag and put it in the box. I don't have a lot of faith that he will use it. Is there a litter out there for this purpose? I would think with all the advances in feline care, there would be something better than cut up plastic strips.

Thanks.

There's a kit called Catrine, with plastic litter, a test tube and a little suction pump, that you can get from a vet's office. Plastic beads of any sort will do, provided they're clean, or uncooked rice or even gravel. You can use a syringe without the needle to get the urine and put it in a jar.

My vet gave me something like black plastic "beads" to use. Its a little more like normal litter, I suppose, but locking my cat in the bathroom for a few hours with that in the litterbox did the trick for me.

Just googled and found it. However, not available in stores. Went to the website and it's just available from vets and certain vet supply co's. That stinks.

Went to pet supply store and bought dust free aquarium gravel. DH came home and he suggested that. I found one that wasn't sharp and had rather rounded edges.

Just thought I'd put that out there for you guys in the future. I hope it works!

Our vet told us to just use rice - just make sure to pour it off ASAP.

That's great! get it to the vet asap though, it needs to be fresh.

For future reference, most vets take the urine straight from the bladder now. If the cat has an empty bladder, the cat can be left at the vet for the day (stressful I know) until the bladder fills.

Keep us updated on Beeba!

I tried the rice, but mine had a light coating of rice dust and it absorbed the little he managed to put out! Ahhhh! Then I thought gravel and went out to the shoulder of the road, but you can't see very well at 6 pm here and everything was too large anyway.

Then my DH said aquarium gravel. Found some dust free. Well, at 3 am I had a beautiful sample, real clear.

Now, off to the vet with specimen!

Thanks all!
