My kitty Dahlia is about 5-6 months old I'm not sure as I found her as a stray. The last few days she was been much much more vocal than usual. She just kinda wanders around crying unstopably. I can't tell if this is a sign she is in heat or just becoming more vocal. Can you guys tell me the signs I should be looking for.

She's in heat if:

She is VERY vocal.

She has become very affectionate and playful.

She is rolling around.

She is restless.

I suggest that you get her spayed ASAP. Some vets will spay while she's in heat although it costs a bit more, other vets will want to wait. I hope that she's an indoor cat and can't get out to get pregnant?

She is strictly an indoor kitty. I start a new job tomorrow and I plan on doing her spay with my forst paycheck. It's something I've wanted to do since I found her but with no job and a severe lack of funds it's something I've been unable to do.

Just be extra vigilant. kittens in heat have a way of getting out, even when there is no way for them to get out!

You can call around to your local shelters and rescues and see if there are any reduced cost spay programs in your area.

Congratulations on your new job, SkyeCat!!
And how awesome that you're putting your kitty first on the priority list like that.

Let us know how it goes and if you need any support when she goes in, we're here for you.

She's definitely in heat sweetheart. Please keep her indoors only and seperated from all male cats (even ones that have been neutered in recent weeks can still impregnate a female). Keep all windows and doors closed....kitties in heat are notorious for seeking out ways to "escape" and go out to find a mate.

The loud vocalization, wondering around the house, etc are all signs she's seeking out a mate (they will also have discharge at times and a swollen belly....another sign is them rolling around on the floor "presenting" themselves.)

I'm soo happy for you that you found a new job! That is wonderful news! I would definitely suggest contacting some low cost spay/neuter clinics in your area (with people falling on hard times, many will help you out with cost). You want to have her spayed asap.

I spent a while working as a vet tech, so if you have any questions or need any help, i'm only a pm away!

(When you do have her spayed, ask for a line of surgical glue on top of her stitches (both disolveable and non-disolveable stitches work well...non disolvable will need to be removed 7-12 days post op...should only take a few minutes and is painless)...

sometimes kittens can be rough on incision sites. I would also get her an e-collar...punch holes in the bottom of the collar and then tie it onto her regular collar with string or a zip tie so that she can not get it off...being sure to cut the ends off. Keep in mind if you use the e-collar you need to lower her water dish & food within her reach. You also want to keep her in a confined area (like a bedroom or bathroom) post op so that she doesn't jump around too much and rip out her stitches. You also want to use a litter like Yesterday's News while she is recovering so that she does not get clay littler into her incision site as that can cause an infection.

Also, please insist on a spay tattoo when you have her fixed! Most shelters/vets will do them at no extra cost....all they do is insert a needle filled with colored tattoo ink under the stitches after the surgery. This is a wonderful tool because should she ever escape and wind up in a shelter or vets office....if they shave her belly to see if she's been altared...they will clearly see a spay tattoo and know not to reopen her. (sometimes when kittens are spayed at a young age the tattoo can heal soo well it's almost invisible years down the road....tattoos make it obvious the kitten's been fixed.) I would also suggest having her microchipped while she is under anestesia as well.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice and tips I will surely keep them in mind when I take her in. I want to get it doone ASAP because I feel so bad for her.
