I don't have any idea, but it is not a complicated surgery so it would be much less than any type of internal surgery I'm assuming. I'm pretty sure he will need that done though since there is quite a bit of the tail degloved.

Best of luck to you both today! Please let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the input everyone. We just got back from the vet and it went very well, he was pretty brave.

First, he weighs 8.6lbs and then when we tried to remove the bandage from his tail, he become a little vocal (meowing) but once it was removed and I saw it for the first time, it was obviously bone. So they took him to the back for about 10 minutes (while I could hear him meowing in discomfort) while they were shaving his tail a little more. He came back in with a small neon green wrap on the end of his tail and the doctor informed me that his tail was healing well on its own already but they just snipped a small section from the end of his tail and goes in for a checkup thursday afternoon.

In addition he got his shots so he is now laying down resting but still breathing fast as I am sure he is still traumatized but we have some Amoxicillin for antibiotic and Metacam Oral Suspension for Pain.

Other than that, it was pretty reasonable, only $140.00 including the check up cost, meds and work performed so that was relieving.

I also found out that he has a heart murmur, so I think I am going to look into cat insurance so that I can take him in to get further testing done on that issue but does anyone have any advice or good resources on heart murmurs in cats?

Thanks for everyone's input, very appreciated!

Kitty is so lucky that you are caring for him.

We have several member who have heart-murmur kitties.
You might want to start a thread with heart murmur in the title so that you revive more feed back about that specific issue.

Sending vibes for a quick tail healing.

So glad the visit went well. Sending tons of healing vibes for kitty's tail

I agree about starting a new thread regarding the heart murmur. You should get some responses to that from people with experience.

Thanks for the update! So glad everything is alright! While he's on the amoxicillan you might want to give him a little probiotic every day to keep him from getting intestinal upset.

Be very very careful and sparing with the metacam. Metacam is very dangerous in cats, it has been known cause acute kidney failure in some cats. I know many vets use it these days, but I think blood work should be done beforehand to check kidney function. I refuse to use it in my cats.

As for the insurance, do your research, most have pre-existing clauses and will not cover conditions that have been diagnosed prior to signing up.

Glad your cat's been seen and he's on the mend. That's very good to hear!! Good, too, that he only lost a small portion of his tail. Kitties use those things for some serious communication.

I stepped on my 8 month old male cate Fluffy Monster's very pouffy tail hair and he took off and left behind his skin and yes, exposed 1.5 inches of bone. It bled slightly. The next day, I rinsed it under cool tap water once per day. I allowed him to groom his tail. He is acting 100% normally. His vet appointment is 6 hours from now, and I havn't been able to see much more as his hair is covering it and possibly kinda stuck. I saved the furrball, and could feel all the skin insid. The very tip of the tail has a little ball like a ball point pen. I do not want to amputate ---- however his tail does droop from halfway down so he may have a mid point injury from the force. I love him. Awe. Mommy is so sorry.

My cat ripped his fur and skin off today too. We were playing by the back of the door, and it opened. He us now missing all of that. The bone us sticking out and I don't know what to do.
we poured some salt on it but I think it made it worse. He us hissing and running around.

Why did you pour salt on it?? That is probably burning terribly.

Please get your cat to a vet immediately. If you don't, he will likely get an infection and the tail will start to die.

He needs to go to the vet right away. This isn't something that will heal by itself. He could get a life threatening infection or have to have much more costly surgery if you don't get it treated fast.

Um, yeah. So.....this is a rather strange story, but my first kitty--she used to chase her tail as a kitten because she had a white tip on the end of it. Whenever our house hold became very stressful, she began to chase her tail, bite it and growl and his because someone bit her tail. So, um, yeah. Fast forward to a very stressful time and many years later, she actually bit part of her own tail off---there is no muscle in the tail--it's an extension of the backbone. It's just cartalidge and skin/fur.

Kitty needs vet ASAP. My kitty did this in the 90s and treatment was antibiotics, prednisone and yes, the dreadful cone of shame. I was aghast because she'd bitten off her adorable white tipped tail!!! The vet further informed me that if the area died, it would need to be amputated. OOOH! But, she healed perfectly and her white tip even grew back <3

So, I know this kitty will be ok! Tail included, as long as the damage isn't too severe.
