Litter Pan Liners??

I have always used the plastic liners in my litter pans, but am wondering if it's really necessary. Would like to know what other cat owners do.

I use wood pellet litter with a sieve tray, I use bin liners in the bottom tray to make cleaning easier.

In conventional trays they are often shredded so many don't use them, do what works for you.

I have a cat that likes to try to chew on plastic... Not necessarily because he wants to eat plastic any more, but mostly because it drives me absolutely crazy. Besides that, I and others here, use rubbermaid bins - these have really tall sides.

I tried using the pan liners when I got my first kitten and found they're more trouble than they're worth. The first time kitty digs all the way to the bottom the plastic gets shredded. Then you end up with pee trapped underneath where it never dries out. It's so much easier to keep the litter box clean without the liner. I also have a cat who likes to chew on plastic which means she would probably end up eating some of the litter along with the liner.

I used one out the pack a couple of years ago and i took it out at the end of the day because they were useless for want of a better word.

I agree with the general consensus that they are useless. I use the big bins for litter boxes, but also have some traditional sized boxes.

As for what I do...I scoop the boxes at least four times a day, and dump and scrub, air dry, once a week.

(I have two extra litter boxes that I put down while the other four are being dumped and scrubbed and dried)

I tried them one time and my cats shredded the plastic. I just have extra bins that I rotate into the mix when I empty out a box. I clean the dirty ones and rotate in the clean one.

I don't how much my opinion would count considering I've only had my kitten for about a month, but I've used the large litter liners in Iroh's litter box and I love them. Yes, they do get some tears in them from his claws, but it still makes cleaning the litterbox out completely much easier and less messy.

I can't stand the things. Not only the claws ripping, but they also hold urine in the folds and it really stinks. Plus, they're only useful if you dump the entire contents of the box on a regular basis, and I don't (clumping litter stays clean if you scoop it often enough).

I tried them once many years ago when Shady was still with us. After covering his "business", he immediatley began working on that liner. Digging, scratching, pulling all around the edges of the box until it was basically a bag of litter in the middle of the box! I felt he had given me his opinion so I tossed out the rest of those liners.

I hate them. I tried them, the cats shredded them, I never bought them again.

I used one out of a box and never went back to them again. I cant stand the non clumping litter at all for one even though its cheaper you still end up spending the same if you dump the litter 2 times a day and have to keep refilling it, and my cats dont like the non clumping litter. But Id never use those liners because the one time I did Hercules tore the bag to bits and pieces and it was more of a pain than anything

Liners may work for declawed cats, but they get too ripped up with clawed cats - especially those that are diggers when covering up.

I don't use liners at all - and we use the wood stove pellets for litter anyway.

IMO they are a waste of money.

I like liners, but find them too expensive, so instead I use 10 gal. kitchen trash bags. I put the pan inside the bag and secure it at the open end. When it's time to dump the litter, I simply turn the bag inside out to contain the litter and release the pan. Works for me!

If any pee or litter clings to the pan, then I just take it outside and wash it with the garden hose.
