I just received a link to this very interesting article about purring in my "Soft Paws Mewsletter" from Dr. Schelling, the Soft Paws vet, and thought I'd share it.

Oh, my, gosh, Bunnelina, I freakin' LOVE that first photo!!

"Big cats that do not roar, such as mountain lions and ocelots, are known to purr. There are even some reports of leopards purring."

I always wondered about this, just never got around to looking it up. Interesting. I wonder how loud a leopard's purr is?

I haven't really seen anyone mention purring to convey non-aggression - at least not towards humans. My little semi-ferals purr a lot, and have from the start - they're not aggressive at all (thankfully). Though I know a lot of their purrs are happy purrs too - purr over a new toy, purr over their meals, purring during belly rubs while chewing on my fingers, etc.

Something I've also never seen addressed - why do kittens purr so much louder than adult cats do? I have one who now has a barely audible purr, as a kitten you could hear him across the room. (when he was little and sick with an URI that was actually our warning to wake up - snotty purring kitten making his way towards your face, that he'd then sneeze in).
