Gary and I went on our first date when I was a Jr. in high school. It was a few weeks before halloween. About a week before Christmas he invited me to fly down to Disney World with him. Of course I said no! Not only was it too short notice - I was a Jr. in high school, and there was no way my parents were letting me travel anywhere with a boyfriend - and abandon the family for a holiday like that?

He'd left home at 15 (he's only 5 months older than I am) but didn't think it was a crazy invitation.

We were laughing about that tonight - but it did kind of make us take a step back when we realized - that was 30 years ago!

Yup, I'm already feeling like an old lady, THANKS CHRIS!

Too bad he had to go join the army and I went to a Quaker college.
We "lost" 12 years before he found me again. I think we pretty much spend 24 hours a day together because we're still busy making up for all that lost time.

I KNOW!!
Laurie, any time you mention Gary in your posts, there is so much affection in your tone, and when I see it, it gives me hope that it IS possible to have that strong connection and love with someone that I personally only have read about in books and seen in movies..

Wow Laurie, that's amazing! I can't believe you were separated for 12 years and were able to reconnect so strongly. That's wonderful.

The really wild thing? 6 months within his looking up my parents (who still lived at the same address), they moved from IL to GA. He never would have been able to find me!

It is out there.
I didn't find it until I stopped looking for it totally and completely. I got to a totally happy with me comfortable place and SO did not want to date or look for the "right" man... and that's when he called. We were married 3 months later. Gary says he knew the minute he saw me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I wasn't that in touch with "me" back then, so he had to wait for me to catch up to him.

You know, I've seen that phenomena with cats that pick their owners. Perhaps Gary has some cat in him?!?!?

That is amazing Laurie!! Congratulations to both of you!!

Time flies when you're having fun

I think it's so sweet that Gary came looking for you after all that time. 30 years is a long time to love someone. (our 35th anniversary is coming up, and I can't believe we've been together that long)
I hoipe you and your sweetie have many, many more happy anniversaries ahead of you.

Only 19 more years together before we've been together 35 years! That is amazing.

It is certainly a very romantic and sweet story. It actually proves that like they say some things are just meant to be and I think You and Gary were definitely one of those things..

Hmmmm 30 years ago I was a new bride! I got married to DH on Sept 8, 1979. I met him April of 1978 after I had a hard break up. I didn't really start dating until I was a senior.

This seems like a pretty common scenario. I think that often people feel that they "need" to have a partner and they walk around wondering what's wrong with them and unconsciously pushing people away. Once you've accepted who you are, it makes it so much easier to connect with another person and realize whether that they're right for you.

Congratulations on you and Gary having found each other. It's a really sweet story.
