Hi, I was going to post this in IMO but I can't yet as I don't think I have been a member for long enough. I read the Sun newspaper everyday online to catch up with the news over here- I just came accross this story about animal testing, I am absolutely devestated that cruelty like this is still going on over here, I thought that the government cracked down on this kind of thing years ago. It really has made me upset and I want to try and help get something done about this.x

I'm not sure what to do about helping as I don't know anything about the laws in England regarding animal testing and cruelty. I hope that someone else on the forum has some good ideas.

Poor little bunnies..... I love rabbits!!

My personal opinion is that our government is a complete joke, they don't seem to be interested in much, I might contact my local MP (member of parliament). I hope also after this story has been printed and these people have been exposed the RSPCA take action.x

There is no need for animal testing. This is the 21st century. Not the 3rd. They can send men to the moon, they should be able to find another way to test stuff. Makes me sick. I could easily become a radical on this issue!

I hate people...that is just horrible. And pointless. i dont understand animal testing. why would we test an anti wrinkle agent on something that DOESNT HAVE WRINKLES? Not to mention i am against botox in general. It was made for people who have spastic muscles to improve their lives. My little brother has cerebral pausy and had to have injections in all of his major muscles to stop them from seizing up. THAT is what it was made for...not anti aging. BUT even in that case i think there is no justification for animal testing.

Botox testing? On rabbits? Ugh...that is pointless and cruel! I thought I read somewhere they were now replacing animal testing with machines/computers or synthetic body parts? I am pretty sure I read that before.

Personally they should test botox and other cosmetics on the people who wanna wear them/have it done!

I thought animal testing is when they make a product that could potentially have negative health affects, but they aren't sure, so they test on animals to see if it is safe...
I don't know of a company that does animal testing, I just went through all of my cosmetics and on all of them it says "not tested on animals", and I didn't consciously choose to buy those because of that....So I am surprised they still do this!!

I did not read the article above, and am commenting non specifically.
While I agree that there is a lot of needless animal testing done, animal testing is necessary for the production of safe products, especially pharmaceuticals. Even just to understand disease, sometimes you need to use an animal for that. For example, I need to manipulate live neuronal cells - do you think I should get these from people?!?!?! I sure hope not. So I have an animal model of disease, that has already yielded results that have had a direct positive influence on the people who have the actual condition my mouse models. Do you think this research should not be done and the people with diseases and serious QOL issues should continue to suffer? I do not. While I do not like the use of animals for human benefit, I am far from being against it. And those of you who think it is never justified, I hope you live your ethics and never take any drug treatments for anything, prescription or OTC. There are unnecessary uses, but there are also good things that come from animal research and testing as well. I constantly try to reduce the number of animals I use, or to find alternate ways to do experiments, but sometimes its just not feasible, and I would still like to try to help actual people, and right now, yes, we still need to use animals to do this 21st century or not.

I worked at a genetics lab where we had to kill mice and take their liver, extract proteins and histones from it
We were also working with ovarian cancer, so in order to get ovarian cancer cells we had to use cloning of mutated genes to get mice with ovarian cancer. So all of those poor mice had ovarian cancer, and we didn't even need all of them- we had to kill the ones we didn't need just because it was too expensive to keep them. While I fully agree that it's necessary, it was a terrible experience. It was one of the reasons I left that field and switched to history and sociology so I can instead focus on the ethics of science. It seems like scientists do not think twice about what they are doing and the implications. And I say this from experience, everyone in the research group I worked with was so busy figuring out formulas and making their experiments work, no one had time to even discuss whether they felt like it was okay to kill mice. It was a terrible environment for me, I felt so disillusioned and like I lost my purpose in life, because the goal became, can I get the correct results, without even thinking about how can the results be used in the future, or how did previous scientific breakthroughs change society....I feel like, if you can kill a mouse and get its liver and go on with your day as if nothing happened, there is something seriously wrong with society. I dunno, just my personal opinion, maybe I'm just really naive.

The RSPCA are aware of the article I posted. Its the conditions these poor animals have to live in, animals are a gift to us, whatever happens in the wild with animals killing other animals is nature but for a human to take an animal and be so damn cruel breaks my heart and for botox is absolutely an unneccessary action, botox now is used for so called beauty purposes. We would not let a human be treated in this way so why an animal, could you imagine living one of these animals lives? Its unthinkable, the pain must be unbearable, so sorry to be harsh but I am being realistic.x
