Sadie's Coughing

I think this cat is unhealthy and needs to be putdown. Im going to make an appt. tomorow and see what happens but I really do think it is what's best for her. as of now. She is still moaning and her poo hasnt firmed up and she is still pukeing up green stuff. I've changed her catfood a week to a week and a half ago but it hasnt helped as she hates it. I REALLY do think this is the best for Sadie.

Before you make any hasty decisions, please talk to the vet. t could be something very simple that can be easily taken care of. You haven't even spoken to your vet about any of these problems, so there is no way of knowing what is really wrong with her.

First of all: stop changing her food immediately - her poop will NEVER firm up, and she will never get better if you continue to change her food every week. You simply do not change a cat's food every week. A cat takes at least 2-3 weeks to get used to the new food, so leave her on one food for a while, otherwise she will never get better. Ask the vet tomorrow what she should be eating.

Second, and I am so sorry if this is going to sound harsh, but... You came here a week ago, posted that she might have distemper, and you had to wait to take her to the vet... We gave you advices, told you to see a vet, you said you needed to wait. I remember you saying that you were desperate, then.... nothing.
We tried to follow up with you, to see if she was still vomiting, and you didn't respond... and apparently you never took her to the vet.
There was no response from you... No update was posted, so I am assuming she was never taken in - correct me if I am wrong....
So... You made a diagnosis from I am not sure where that she had distemper...
Now you are talking about putting your cat down because she is coughing?

And you haven't even taken her to a vet yet?
I am sorry if I am being harsh, but... Tiffany, this is kind of wrong...
It is my understanding you just got this cat... You need to take responsibility for her... If she is sick, you need to act upon it and take her to the vet. If what you are saying is true, this cat has been throwing up green for 2 weeks without seeing a vet.
She NEEDS to see a vet. There is nothing we can tell you to make her better.

And you know... Now it makes a lot of sense that she is moaning... this cat is is uncomfortable... is in pain... That is probably why the poor thing is moaning... please please please take her to the vet tomorrow and treat her...

Im calling the vet tomorow and asking ?'s.

Pet care can quickly become expensive and labor intensive...
a phone call is not good enough.
Sadie needs to be seen by a vet.

If you, or your family, are unable or unwilling to get Sadie to a vet for a proper diagnosis,
then you need to find a local, no kill, shelter that will take her.

Sadie deserves a chance at life.
She absolutely needs to be seen by a vet, and I think you know this. Please book her in ASAP to get her treated.
Oh dear, I'm sad to hear this poor kitty is still suffering without vet care. I hope if you can't take her in asap (not just a phone call), that you will turn her over to either a shelter or someone who can care for this poor girl, sounds like she's had a rough life so far and deserves to be in a loving place where she can be cared for properly.
I agree with everyone else.
You should give her up.
I would never go and have a cat pts like you want to do.
You say she had distemper when you did not go to the vet even.
She needs to be seen by a vet.
There are so many things it can be.

I think it would help if your mom explained. Don't feel bad Tiffany. I know you're just a kid and you don't hold the purse strings. I hope your mom can get the cat taken care of or adopted out to someone who can. It was good of you to take her in and try your best.

I haven't followed Sadies story very carefully, but I was wondering if any kind of blood work was ever done?

I am sorry she is not improving more quickly, I hope you can get her some help.

Tiffany, great she stopped throwing up for a day. She still needs to go to the vet. When are you going to take her to the vet?
Since she got there she has been moaning, has diarrhea, has been throwing up green, and has now started to cough. She will not get better by a miracle.
Sadie needs to go to the vet urgently. I know you can understand that. Please take her to the vet. PLEASE.

This cat has clearly been suffering and she needs help! Please do the right thing and take her to the vet asap. It could very well be serious and she might die if you don't. Refusing to take a suffering animal for treatment is extreme cruelty. If you won't take care of her, then surrender her to a rescue group that will!

Sadie, our recently adopted cat, makes a constant noise. It seems to be associated with her breathing. She also gets coughing fits when she inhales deeply. She usually does this when she is getting attention, and she gets overexcited. She also, from time to time, regurgitates her food. We took her to the vet when we got her. The vet said her lungs are clear and really had no explanation for what causes the noise she mak her namees. We are really not sure how old she is. The vet estimated 9 years. She seems happy, but the noise is just annoying. Any ideas would be appreciated. I plan to take her to another vet when she is a little more acclimated. I don't think she is in any immediate danger as she has apparently had these problems for some time. My daughter has been posting on this board since getting Sadie. I am posting under her name. We do not plan to give Sadie to a rescue group, as apparently suggested by some posters. We are just looking for some ideas as to what might be wrong. I will take her to a vet again, but want to get her a little more acclimated before upsetting her by putting her in a carrier and going to the vet. Thanks for your input.

Thank you for sharing this info with us Pam.

As you can imagine, without a good workup from a vet, it is almost impossible to guess what Sadie's health issues might be.

If Sadie were my kitty, I would request, from a vet...
a full blood panel, UA, stool culture and complete physical.
This info would be a good start to rule out parasites or other obvious illness and give your vet a good baseline.

After such a difficult life, I am so glad that Sadie found her way to your loving home.

You are welcome to join us here anytime.
Please keep us updated about Sadie's progress.

It could be heartworms. They can do a test for that and give her medication to help the cough and vomiting.

Pam,
Thank you for coming aboard... Unfortunately this can be a number of things, and only a vet would be able to assess the situation.
The fact that she has survived this long is no indication, IMHO that she is in no immediate danger... It might be on the contrary, actually...

I am assuming you took her to the vet when you first got her?
Was the vomiting discussed then? Was it even an issue at the time? Tiffany describes it as green vomit - can you describe it to us?
Also, is there food pieces in the vomit, or it is smooth? Is it right after she eats, or after a while?

About the coughing: Cough is not normal for cats, in no circumstances.... It can be in the best case scenario hairballs, but that doesn't seem to be the case... Then it can be asthma, heartworms, etc... but it is never normal to cough, and regular "cough fits" definitely warrants a vet visit.

Pam, a cat will never get acclimated enough before seeing a vet. They hate it, no matter what. They hate it today, they will hate it tomorrow.
IMHO Sadie needs to see a vet now - postponing taking her now can escalate the health issues into something much more serious and costly to take care of - both for her and for you and your family.
Cats are notorious for hiding disease and pain - if Sadie seems 1/2 sick now, is because she is sick.
Please, do not delay this... if all possible... please take this little girl to the vet...
Thank you Pam -

I'm just reading this thread, and I have to agree with everyone who is recommending a trip to the vet without any further delay.

Cats don't cough without a reason, and they certainly don't vomit up green stuff. They hide pain and illness as a built-in survival mechanism, so what you see is only what the cat can't possibly hide; it's a guarantee Sadie feels worse than you think she does.

Please take her in.

She is not pukeing up green and seems to have stoped pukeing.

Declawing is a terrible thing to do.
It is like getting parts of your fingers cut off.
