New kitty desperate for attention

Hi folks. My wife and I just picked up our first kitty last week. He's about 12 weeks old and has come from a house with five other cats and four adults. He is very very affectionate and loves to sit on our laps and be fussed but the moment one of us leaves the room he'll walk into the middle of the floor looking all lost and meow and meow and meow like a crazy thing. Even if he can see us he'll do it, sometimes following one of us into the kitchen or bathroom and just meow over and over and over. Once we sit down he'll jump up on our lap and lay down and after five minutes or so will finally purr quietly.

Night times are worst when we go to bed. The first night he wailed constantly, so much so that we only managed about an hour of sleep, he was really going for it relentlessly, once every 2 seconds without fail for at least five hours. We tried letting him on our bed and he sat still but the meowing continued, we then tried to put him in his room where he has a bed and litter tray and a lot of toys but again he just carried on. The second night was better, on the advice of a friend who has had many cats we put him straight to his own room and he went nuts to begin with but eventually calmed down enough for us to sleep until 4am when he woke us again by pulling the phone off the wall...

It seems to be improving very slightly but he's meowing so much I think we're both going to go completely insane. Is there anything at all we can do? He's a wonderful cat with a gentle nature and he adores his toys, seems very smart indeed, he's just killing us with all his shouting!

He's just a baby - that's what they do. As he gets older he should cry for you less, but it's just something you'll have to get used to for now.

As the above poster has said, he's a baby and he's been put into a new and strange place so needs lots of reassurance. Remember he also came from a household with other kittens and cats so he'll be missing them.

We started Bijou sleeping with us when we got him and although kitties can be a bit restless at first, he will adjust to your timetable and will learn that night time is for sleeping. Patience (and ear plugs) will work wonders.

It sounds as though you have a real lovebug there - you are very lucky. Some folks would love to have a cat that affectionate. I have to say our Bijou is very affectionate even at 6 years old and really wants and needs to be in whatever room my hubby or I are in at any given time. If hubby closes the door to the computer room to practice his guitar, Bijou will sit at the door and cry.

Last, but not least, we need pictures in the Fur Pictures Forum.

Thanks folks I had a feeling it might just be his age and missing the other cats. Incidentally as I typed that first message he went off downstairs on his own and played happily for two whole hours which is a first, I could hear him going crazy with his ping pong balls and his mouse for ages. He's now back here with me curled up on my lap sleeping. He really is such a softie.

I'll get some pictures as soon as I can get him to sit still for a second, so far the only ones I can get are when he's sleeping!

Gosh, he sounds adorable. I for one can't wait to see pictures.

Get him a small stuffed animal "friend". I'm sure he's lonely and needs a little security blanket. He sounds adorable!

Oh I never thought of a little 'friend' for him, I'll try that.

If it makes you feel better, Bijou's little sister that I was "kitty-sitting" for about a week wouldn't even eat unless I sat on the floor beside her while she was eating and she would keep looking up at me to make sure I didn't leave. Her owner calls her "velcro kitty".
