My favorite question to ask:

1. Give us 25 random facts about you...
Can be absolutely anything you wish to share. (ex. I drink my coffee with milk and sugar...I dye my hair.... I collect whatever... etc)

That have not been already addressed

Actually, with the free association thing, a friend and I used to do something like this. We'd start with one word, and go down the length of a page. Then we'd switch pads of paper, and go down the page again, but free associating with the word to the left. Do that for as many columns as fit across - and it was often really interesting! Definitely fun.

1) Do you have a stereo in one room that plays tunes at home, or do you have speakers that pipe music throughout the house?
I have concert level Bose speakers. They are loud enough to hear all over the house.

2) Do you have speakers to play music outside - or do you bring out a boom box or something?
See previous. We can easily hear the inside speakers in the next county!!

3) Do you play any instrument? Take lessons as a kid?
I play the piano once in a great while. I took about 8 years of lessons as a child (starting at age 5).

Chicago-themed questions:

4) Were you born in Chicago or did your family move there after you were born? When did you leave?
I was born in Chicago and lived there until I was 13, then moved to the southern suburbs. Left the southern burbs for the western burbs, then moved back to Chicago on the far northwest side.

5) Do you like Chicago style pizza - if so, what's your favorite? Thin crust, thick crust or Chicago style? Ever been to or had Lou Malnatti's?
Chicago style pizza? YOU BET YOUR SWEET BIPPY!!
My favorite is stuffed, which is just one type of thick crust Chicago style. There was a Lou Malnatti's down the street from where I worked in downtown Chicago and I ate there at least once a week for many years.

6) Ever had a Francheesie?
Huh? I guess the answer would be no.

7) Ever shop at Marshall Field's or Carson Pirie Scott?
I'm still bummed that Macy's bought out Marshall Field's. But at least I can drive across the street where I work right now and buy Frango Mints!! I loved the 9 story store on State Street the best - used to walk over there at lunch also. Carson Pierie Scott was my second favorite store.

8) Did you go to the beach regularly? Which one? Been to Oak Street Beach? Further North - Gilson Park? Perhaps as far north as the Elm St. Beach in Kenilworth/Winnetka?
For the city proper, I hung out at either Oak Street or North Ave beach. We spent a lot of time at the Indiana Dunes and Michigan Dunes also.

9) Ever visit the Northern burbs for any reason?
Not so much the northern burbs as much as the northwest burbs. I have family in Crystal Lake (was there a few weeks back), had family in Arlington Heights, and more in Evanston.

10) Did you ever visit the Bahai Temple?
Not that I recall, but I may have been there as a child.

11) Ever take the coal mine tour at the Field Museum?
So long ago that I don't remember much of it. The last few times I visited that museum, it was so crowded that I saw a portion of it and left.

12) Been to the Shedd Acquarium? Adler Planetarium? The Oriental Art Museum?
Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium - definitely, many times. Oriental Art Museum no. I preferred the Chicago Art Museum - they had free admission on Tuesdays and we went there after work at least a dozen times a year.

13) Which is your favorite blues club (in Chicago)? Favorite bar?
I don't even remember the name of this Blues Club / bar, but it was where I used to go see Koko Taylor (near north side). When DH and I started dating, he lived by Lincoln Park and counted over 100 bars within a 1 mile radius of his apartment, and that excluded east (as that is where Lake Michigan is). I never really had a favorite - it was who ever had the best live band that night.

14) Ever been to Butch Maguire's, Mothers.... River Shannon, Easy-Does-Its?
Been to Mothers and probably Butch Maquire's. That part of town was loaded with the "surbanites" who came into the city on weekends to drink and whoop it up. I preferred the clubs that were for the "locals".

15) Ever been to Charlie Trotter's or Gordons? (Downtown restaurants). Morton's Steakhouse?
Morton's yes.

16) Been to 2nd City?
Absolutely!! I recall seeing a show one time where the entire cast was hired by Saturday Night Live the following season - Mary Gross, Jim Belushi, Tim Kazurinski and others. We actually used to do bachlorette parties there.

17) Been to or heard of Zorine's?
Nope

18) Ever seen a show at the Aragon Brawlroom?
Saw my first concert there in 1973 - Joe Walsh and Barnstorm.

19) Enjoy Taste of Chicago?
How could I not? When you work downtown for 10 years, you go there for lunch, then return there after work for the concerts.

20) Ever been to Rivinia Park (the festival?)
Yes - the last concert I went to was Gary Puckett and the Union Gap!

...more music questions...

21) ...and one last music question (because I saw all of them in Chicago )

Do you enjoy

Jeff Beck Saw him, wasn't that impressed
Jan Hammer He played with Jeff Beck!
John McLaughlin Never saw him in concert, but they played him on XRT radio
Stanley Clarke Same as John McLaughlin
Chick Corea Never saw her, and while she had a good voice, I didn't like her all that much.

Now I'm taking that sip of diet coke that Chris sent to me!!

Do you play any online games?
Majhong Connect (I'm addicted), and some of the folks here that will remain nameless are getting me hooked on Facebook games

Wii? Playstation - anything like that?
DH bought me a Wii for my birthday last April. I typically play those types of things in the winter so I haven't played it much.

If so... what kind of games to do you like to play?
I got a Fitness Coach - I guess that's not a game, but that was the one thing I was using a lot with the Wii. I love Wii tennis and bowling.

What's your favorite form of exercise?
My main exercise is doing things around the house - climbing ladders to paint, moving tons of rocks, ripping out fences, pruning the trees out of the fence line. That is very hard work and enough exercise for anyone!

Been ice or roller skating/blading recently?
Not for years.

Do you like swimming?
I have a fear of water. I can swim and will swim in pools that are not deeper than my height.

Been sailing?
Only in Hawaii as part of a whale watching cruise. They put the boat on sail and it was a blast.

Many, many times. There are nights that we'll sit outside and look for them.

Do you like stargazing?
We always go out at night for the meteor showers.

How many constellations can you recognize/locate?
I know a few. DH knows nearly all of them so all I have to do is ask him what they are called.

Ever seen a Tornado or water spout?
Yes to both. The tornado that hit our house happened at night so we never did see that one.

Rainbow?
I live somewhere over the rainbow! I've got a great shot of a double rainbow where you could see both ends of it off our deck just recently.

What National Parks have you been to?
Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands, Petrified Forest, Naigra Falls (I believe the American side is a national park), Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Devils Tower (although I think that's just a monument). Ever been hunting? Are you opposed to it in concept? Is it something you'd do if you haven't?
I only hunt with a camera. If you aren't going to use what you kill for food, there is no sport in killing a live animal.

What's the most interesting wild animal you've seen in the wild?
It's a tie between a Gila Monster in Arizona, a Poison Arrow frog in Panama

Longest camping trip you've been on?
2 weeks as a kid. The most interesting camping I did was to spend a week inside the Grand Canyon.

I think you would have made a very good one

11. My husband won me in a poker game (let's see if anyone is actually reading this).

The punch line (my husband won me in a poker game) is actually funnier than what happened, but this can catch people's attention!

There was a large group of young single people that I worked with that hung out together. We'd do things like go to the Kentucky Derby, ski trips, festivals, bars, poker games, concerts, and the usual thing that young single people do. I had been flirting with 2 guys - Steve and Jeff and was waiting for some sort of sign from either one of them that they were the right person for me to pursue.

There was about 30 of us that went on a ski trip to Wisconsin one time. We had rented a couple of chalet's and for the most part, the women stayed in 1 and the men in the other. The women's chalet was over crowded so (darn), I ended up staying at the men's chalet that weekend. It was just me and 16 single guys under the same roof.

After the first day of skiing, we were relaxing at the chalet and decided to play poker. Each person at the table took turns in dealing and would pick the game and the betting value for that round. It was penny/nickle bets - nothing that you would lose any money on. At about 3AM, I decided to spice up the game and called Blackjack with maximum quarter bets. Jeff immediately started to whine and said that it was too much money for a game. Steve (who was sitting across the table from me), looked me in the eye and said "I'll take all your money".

I don't like whiners. Steve had the biggest twinkle in his eye and it caught my attention right then and there. What he won in that game was my attention, and 22 years later, we are still together. And the thing we joke the most about was that he did take all of my money!! I was older than he and had quite a bit of money saved already from working. And being financially irresponsible, he did manage to suck all of it out of me over the years. I've only been able to influence him positively in the last few years.

I know - how romantic!!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Amy, that is a GREAT story!
And yes, I was reading it all too.

That list of free associations would make the base for a great round if you were doing it with a friend!

...and all I have to say after catching up on all of that is... I could handle hanging out with you in my 20s or 30s, but in my 40s, no way could I keep up with you!

Oh - and I'm with Chris. I think you would have made a great mental health worker, whatever capacity you wanted to go! But I totally get you're someone school could not contain!

School bored me. I maintained a straight A average in spite of the partying I did and the fact that I never did homework. Knowledge fascinates me for the simple sake of having it. I've never had to work to obtain it.

I find it funny that you don't think you could keep up with me now. DH makes me keep up an energy level that most people don't have at my age. We are known as the "crazy aunt and uncle" in my family. At my nephew's wedding 2 weekends ago, the night time parties ended up in our hotel room, and we out lasted all of the youngsters (e.g. in their 20's). My nephew has told me that he is on a mission to outlast me one night, then told me that we are his idols.

And I have a question back to you: Did you follow my line of thought thru the word associations? Some of my references were pretty obscure, which tells you my brain has a lot of tidbits that float around in many directions.

And what - no more questions?
