We built a cat tree!

We spent Halloween building a new cat tree. The cats seem to like it and we're pretty proud of the job we did. The best part was that it was built from stuff we had lying around the garage. The only thing we had to buy was sisal rope. So what do y'all think?

Very nice job on the tree. The kittehs seem to like it. Keith is such a cutie! Love the splotch on his nose!

Nice and solid! Great for actual adult sized cats. Do they love the extra tall scratching post on it?
It dwarfs your tiny one, though.

There is a big company in Phoenix that makes a lot of the cat trees you see in PetCo, PetSmart, etc. I got the distinct impression that scrap lumber and carpet were major factors in their construction. Which, I guess, is a good thing!

The two shelves are 22"x18" so there's plenty of room for lounging or wrestling and the older cats like to climb up the tall scratching post to get to that top shelf. The kittens aren't paying much attention to it yet. We are planning on adding some ramps or stairs later because Buster is a senior and it may become difficult for him to jump and climb in the future.

Really great design....
big enough perches for a large cat's comfort.
I love Keith's face.

I may have my hubby build one like that, it looks really comfortable for the cats.

That's a good idea. I have one with a couple of ladders because I have a clumsy cat. If you wrap the ramps in sisal rope or sisal cloth they could double as scratching surfaces.

Nicely done!!

Cool cat tree! I'm going to tell my Mom about it, she wants one but doesn't want to spend the money.

Awesome! Looks like it's kitty approved!

Yes, could I have one in blue? You have a potential cottage industry here!

Your kitties are beautiful! Does this design come with instructions? Can we have a copy?
That's great! I'd love to know how you did that!

Well done!! I'm planning on doing mine too, but right now it's just siting in the dining room missing a huge scrap of carpet (Got tired of Tasha riping little bits out of it all the time - but now it's just started on the other side)

Wonderful! You should be very proud!

Thanks! We built it out of stuff lying around the garage. All the posts are 2x4s except for the tall post it's a 4x4 (actually 2 2x4s nailed together). Make the base REALLY HEAVY so it wont tip over (we nailed 3/4 inch and 1/2 inch pieces of plywood together. The shelves are from an old entertainment center and we nailed some 1x2s to the side so it made a little box. Then just stapled the carpet and wrapped the sisal. It was super easy and fun except for the sisal wrapping that made my hands hurt. I think if you go out and buy the stuff to build one, it would turn out to be pretty expensive. We just pick up stuff on clearance or slightly damaged wood or whatever from home improvement stores and keep it until we get inspired!

It looks fabulous! Hubby and I would have made our own before we bought one, but we didn't have any of the supplies at the time...and like you said, it's cheaper to use extra scraps you have on hand than to go buy the supplies.

Great job! We have all the supplies to build one for Rosalie, just waiting on DH to get some down time from work/dental stuff to help, lol.
