Anyone feeding NB Green Pea & Salmon?

I'm currently using their green pea and duck formula, but the fiber is only 4% max. Like others, I have a cat that's started to get some hairball issues on this formula.

Green pea is good - they all do well on that. Due the fact that all the cats try to play "musical bowls", I preferably need something that's safe for all of them to eat. Thus keeping me in a locked in to using limited ingredient foods.

Is anyone feeding NB's green pea and salmon formula? Do your cats like it? It has fish - but it would only be one of their meals a day (the rest is wet food).

I'd have to order this formula online since the Petco I shop at hasn't stocked it yet (it wasn't there a month ago) - so I'd like to know if it's a decent formula before I make any orders.

Note: the main thing that has changed is that this cat's mane has really fluffed up for winter. He's not shedding more or anything like that.

It doesn't seem that fiber is too low for me... How often do you groom your kitties? Maybe adding a little canned pumpkin to their wet food would help?

Once a week thorough for Sherman + as many touch ups that I can get in before he complains and runs off. He was neutered at ~age 2 and still has some tom cat like issues with being touched. He hasn't actually bitten or scratched me yet, but he'll act like he really wants to. I try to get his mane as often as possible, but it's very long and whenever he tries to lick it or anywhere else on himself that long mane fur gets in the way and he ends up tugging bits out.

I've tried the canned pumpkin on him... fussy cat wouldn't touch it and tried taking another cat's wet food. Ironically he doesn't like probiotics on his wet, either, when most of the other cats love the holistic solutions stuff.

The salmon and green pea is 8% max, btw. Many common foods are 8% or even up to 12% - their previous food was an 8% max.

The rest of the cats are fine. They're all DSHs that would let me brush them bald.

Again - does anyone who actually uses the food have any reviews? My cats are not that picky food wise (as long as I don't try to hide anything in it) but I know some people have had cats that did not like NB foods at all or didn't like some formulas.

Mine didn't like the NB Green Pea & Duck kibble. He ate one meal of it because he loves new things, but never touched it again, which is rare for him when it comes to dry food. He also vomited a few hours after eating it that one time, so I didn't bother with it. Never tried the other dry formulas though.

I, personally, will not feed any fish-based foods with fish as the "main" ingredient. Charlie had one UTI. They may get a nibble of fish from our plates once in a LONG while. I stick to beef, chicken, lamb, venison in my dry, canned, and raw foods.

Then what limited ingredient (one protein and one starch) food do you use? Do you have a suggestion for one that's higher than 4% fiber? Chicken is out, as is corn. I'd prefer to avoid wheat, barley, and soy - since I'm not certain if any of these are a problem with Sherman.
They already get can and only Sherman shows interest in raw (I don't have money, space, or even anywhere to buy good quality meats to even go that route).

I have more than one cat with food issues, which makes this more difficult. ...Allergies/intolerances seem common in all of them - former strays (luckily the female cat just has bug bite issues).

Have you talked to your vet about trying Royal Canin Veterinary Limited Ingredient Diets?

They have lamb, duck, venison and rabbit all with green pea and all over 5% fiber.

It's pricey, but so is NB.

Vets here only do Purina, Hill's, and Eukanuba/Iams. I'm not sure if I could talk them into writing the script for online order since they prefer to use the foods they stock in office. I can ask sometime this week when the kittens go in for their next shots.

I used to feed NB limited ingredient also, but the vet suggested I try the Royal Canin. I'm definitely getting better results with it. My vet stocks it though, so that wasn't an issue.

Petfooddirect says 7% max fiber? Sounds better than 5%. And ouch! $34 for a 6lbs to NB's $23 10lbs.

They get less than 1/4cup of dry a day, though...

I wish I could simply get a decent hairball formula and mix that in... or that I didn't have to sit in the middle of the kitchen to keep them all at their own bowls. Unfortunately the latter issue will only get worse soon.

I have tried Natural Balance limited ingredient dry and had the same result as you....
finally turned to RC limited ingredient pea and venison prescription for her dry kibble.

A friend told me that Royal Canine prescription food is available online, without a perscription...

Does anyone know a site that sells it online?

I'm gonna be switching to the Max Cat chicken based - but chicken won't work for you, so not sure what to suggest. I hope you can find something that will work.

Nutro's Max? Nutro's ok... but looking at their ingredients, there's more issues than chicken to worry about. Such as corn, wheat, and more wheat.

Maybe you're the person I seen mention it elsewhere? I know someone did.

Petfooddirect is the only site I really know of that has a good selection and reviews. I'm not sure if I'd trust a site that sells prescription anything without a prescription.

I could potentially keep Tomas and Siri on NB. Tomas eats fast so no one gets any of his food, and Siri is a grouchy cat with space issues. No cat goes near her bowl. That could save a little money.

Sho runs off easily and usually Sherman switches bowls with him.

Hey, SW. Boy I feel your pain. My foster boys like to play musical bowls and I have one "scarf n barf" and one with lower GI issues. I wrote to NB, explained my situation and asked for samples or coupon, which they said they would send.

Now I am concerned that there is not enough fiber in this food - tho they will eat food with stuff mixed in and will even eat canned pumpkin straight.

I have also heard that the RC Limiited Ingredient foods are better than NB but I also have budget issues.

I have not fed the Salmon and Green Pea to answer your initial question. I wish NB made a dried venison version, like RC, because my boys like the wet version of it.

I thought they use to?
Mine like that wet, too.

Did you see scarf n barf somewhere else or have you coined that term?

Tomas will eat the pumpkin straight, but he isn't the one who needs it. He'll eat plain cooked squashes, too.

The more cats you have the more trouble there is with food.
I hope the NB works out for your cats. Mine really do love the taste of their green pea and duck, if I could keep something with a similar taste and smell, it would be nice - mind you I'm not taste testing anything.
I don't suppose anyone on here has?
Does the RC duck and pea smell similar? Do the other pea formulas smell nice?

I sampled a can of NB wet Duck and green pea - they wouldn't touch it. I'm not sure where scarf n barf came from!
I also wonder if he doesn't have food intolerances like the boy with the GI issues. I have to play lunchroom monitor at meal time and keep the puker cat (Tex) from gobbling up everyone else's food... if there is ANYTHING left on any of the plates he will do that.... so up they go from the floor. And he looks at me like, hey - MOM!! Where are you going with that??????

I don't think NB ever made the dried venison and gp... I know RC does. I just want something they will all eat and will help poor Archie with his stool issues. He is on low dose metro now ... blech... horrible stuff. He is really good about taking it... only fights me a little bit.

As far as taste-testing...hmm... no. But some of the higher quality wet really does smell good, like you could get some crackers and ...... ok... maybe not! :p

My DH eats potted meat - it drives the cats nuts, they always think he has a can of cat food.
A lot - actually all, of the higher quality canned smells better than his potted meat!

Technically sampling dry food wouldn't hurt any of us. I think most of us have eaten dry pet food when we were really young - I did around age two. And that was the whiskas, meow mix, and friskies type stuff.

Have you ever taken metronidazole, yourself? Supposedly cats have less side effects from it, but a cat can't exactly tell you otherwise...
I'm very sensitive/intolerant to it. It's actually in my medical files that I cannot be given this drug - it caused some weird side effects and built up into one of the worst migraines I have had in about 5-6 years. A spooky drug...
I certainly wouldn't want anyone, animal or human, on it long term.

I hope you can find a good food that works for your kitties, too.

^What would your take on 1/6th-1/4cup of the salmon and pea a day be? Would that small of a fishy food be that bad?

Oh, and just so everyone knows. Sherman isn't hacking left and right - So far in the last 3 weeks he's had 3 coughing fits that I've heard. The last two were closer together - Wednesday and Sunday. After inspecting his grooming habits, I figured I better catch this before it gets worse.

I've been giving him paste and some fur is passing in his stool.
