Marlow is inside since this this morning. He has been hanging out all day in the basement. We think he went out early this morning only for a restroom break. He has checked out Sasha's litterbox a few times. He has seen Sasha use the litterbox (Sasha didn't see the humor when Marlow tapped him on the shoulder as he exited the covered box, Marlow sitting on top of it). And I put a box for him in the basement. Will he figure it out?

There's no place like home
Most times they do, but if you want to give him a little help in the mean time, put some of the elements of what he had been using outside in one of the boxes - something like mulch, dirt, etc. If all of that fails, Cat Attract has an earthy smell that will draw him to the box.

You might want to invest in a couple of inexpensive sterilite tubs right now and make sure you have 3 boxes - 1 for each cat plus an extra in case Marlow is not the type that will pee and poo in the same place. Some cats are like that.

I have an extra box. I can probebly get the "Cat Attract" at the local Pet Food Center. Will the "Special Kitty Litter" in the box absorb the "Cat Attract" scent? Should I use regular clay litter to get him started? These may be moot questions by morning.

Hi, so glad Marlow is hanging out inside. The litter should not absorb the cat attract. There is also a cat attract litter by the same company. What has worked the best for me with ferals and my resident cats is the "Kitten Cat Attract". It is a fine sandy litter with the cat attract incorporated in it. Having been outside he may like the sandy litter. No matter which litter you use, I would stay with an unscented. If you use the kitten attract to get him started, you can gradually put another unscented litter in there to change the litter used.

He may do better with an uncovered litter box. At the home improvement centers in the concrete section they sell a "concrete mixing pan". It's a nice sized pan at a good height and it cost about $4.50 around here. That's cheap and large enough to help in getting him used to a box.

Putting two litter boxes in the area he is hanging out will help. As mentioned, some cats will not pee and poo in the same box.

Long wordy info but short term for tonight, give him 2 uncovered litterboxes for now. To get him through the night if you can't purchase a litter box just find a storage container, a box, a disposable aluminum roasting pan, anything might work for one night.

All the best to you and your wife for giving Marlow a home and Sasha a companion.

Glad he is wanting to stay inside, I hope he figures out the litter box and does well with it.
