while surfing the local news channel,a story stood out.It claimed that Wal-Mart was now selling caskets.I thought it was a joke. But, OMG--it is NOT a joke!!!!!

I don't actually see a problem with that. The funeral homes charge exorbitant prices for caskets - and if one is being cremated you pay big bucks just to rent one for the funeral ceremony.

I think it's a great idea.

Costco has 'em, too. One of my siblings wanted to get one for my father when he died but they only had metal ones and we wanted wood.

LMAO That's very nice, and gorgeous caskets! Are they really that cheap in US? Change the $ to € sign and the price matches our prices...and the caskets here are a lot uglier. I think I need to preorder mine from US. I'm propably weird but I have planned my funeral already (I'm 24), the casket and what kind of gravestone, what color and style the engraving font should be, flowers..
But seriously, if people would think about these things and write them down, it would be much easier for their family and friends when they don't have to think about those things 'when the time comes'.

I won't be making any funeral directors rich. I am for cremation, with no casket.

that's a great idea, I think I'll do the same. I think it would help loved ones because they would feel like you're still there and in control of what happens to your own funeral all the way up to the moment you are buried.
It's good wal mart is selling them, makes life easier. But all these caskets look like moving beds!!! I just want a freaking wooden box for goodness sake! I don't care about pillows inside...

Same here, but the funeral homes make you rent a casket for viewing if you choose to have viewings. They don't actually burn that casket.

My mom did all her planning and prepaid most of it. Instead of an urn for her ashes, we bought an unpainted wooden jewellery box from the chip carving supplier then my daughter and I chip carved it with my mom's name, date of birth and death, some roses and hubby stained and varnished it. That's what my mom wanted because it was more personal.

I'm thinking of one of these cardboard caskets... I like the one with the peas; and no embalming it poisons the ground.

I agree about the funeral home charging OVER prices on them.We paid about $4000.00 for Karri's.
I don't see anything wrong with wal-mart selling them.I was just blown away by it

Hey, what's wrong with "RICH"? We're Capitalist don't ya' know.

Well, we can make someone else RICH other than the funeral director, ... I know, let's make sure the Death Tax is still collected. - that's when - never mind - need to stay on topic.

You dont' have to "rent" a casket for viewing if you are being cremated. You can just have the little urn/box on display - I've been to one before.

Hmmmmmmmmm, don't know how to break this to you guys, but I am old enough to remember caskets being sold in regular stores. Everything old is new again.

Some people still prefer to have an actual viewing before the cremation

As for walmart selling caskets, I am not suprised nor bothered by it

As Eithne said, you can choose to have the deceased on view for family and friends and the cremation is done after the funeral service which is how my mom, my friend's husband had it done (those are the only 2 cremations I personally know of) so in our case we did indeed have to rent a casket.

My friend did not have her husband interred but my mom's ashes are buried beside my dad.

That's pretty good that Wal-Mart sells coffins. I wonder if they sell them in stores anywhere? It would be pretty funny to put one on your cart and roll it around the store to see peoples' reactions. I got a bit of a giggle that nearly 90% of the people that searched for "caskets" on the site ended up buying an urn instead.

We had my sister cremated no casket, so that's probably the way I'll go unless I decide to donate my body to science.

Im not suprised because Cost-Co stores sells them too. Look at it this way, when someone you love passes away, you go to walmart and you got it all! You got your casket, you got your flowers, heck they may even have funeral announcements. I havent decided what is happening with my body.....and I really dont want to think about it since well im not even 21 yet

I asked DH if he wanted to be buried or cremated and he said, "Stuffed."

The answers that he comes up with, lol.

Sounds good - tell him they call it taxidermy and then you can place him in front of the TV for all the big football games.

Don't forget to ask what position he wants to be in...forever.

I want a glass coffin Durable enough to be buried without breaking it.. Mausoleum or catacomb would be better but propably not available for me.

That would be Pyrex, right?

I've already told hubby that I want to be cremated and my ashes scattered at my favorite fishing hole. I haven't considered whether or not to have a viewing because I had never heard of viewings until I came to the Midwest. Where I was raised, they just have a memorial service and call it good.

I heard of this on the radio the other day and while I have no problem with it,it sounded weird at first! I am used to going to Wal-Mart for just about everything, but not caskets! So it caught me off guard.
