I don't know what this behavior means in kitty speak...

I brought Pip home on October 9 so he's only been officially in my home for 3 weeks. I've seen some promising signs that Jaders has been accepting Pip's entry to the household (I've seen her lick him a couple of times, she's been able to sleep in my bed when he was already in it, etc.) but today... I don't even know what the behavior I saw today even means...

Pip was walking across the room, minding his own business when Jaders burst out from under the couch and literally knocked him over. She then turned and it looked like she may have bitten him on the front shoulder. If she did bite him it didn't break skin or anything as Pip didn't make a peep when she did this and I just checked him for damage. His fur isn't even wet there. Since Jaders is twice as big as Pip despite being a full year younger, I jumped up to grab one of them, but stopped when I saw the apparent display of aggression stop.

Jaders let Pip get back to his feet and she approached him slowly as he hunkered down on the carpet more. She then lowered her head really far down and meowed. When Pip did nothing in response, she sat up, stared at him for another moment, and trotted off.

So my question... What on earth does it mean? Is this a regression back towards Jaders not being able to stand Pip, was she trying to get him to roughhouse with her, or was this some sort of weird mating ritual? I just want to know what it is and whether I need to start separating them again or if I should just let them be.

I'm sure you'll get more responses, but when mine were meeting, I was told it was a good sign about the grooming, and the sleeping on the same bed - and, that if there was 'fighting', but no blood, no screeches, no fur flying around the room, it was all good and just let them be. If you are there and worried, maybe try to distract one with a toy, but I think they're just working things out between the two of them, and that things are going quite well, really!

I bet she was just trying to get some play going. My little girl has done that to my boy, who's twice the size, and vice versa. I get more nervous when he's chasing her, but she never back down and I gradually calmed down enough to let them be, as long as I don't hear any real screeching going on.

Well, that's pretty much the way my 2 boys play. One usually starts it by "jumping" the other one.

Yeah, think of this type of play as practice for the real thing -- they have to keep their paw in, so to speak, but as long as nobody draws blood, it's all good.

It sounds to me like play. But then again with my own cats it seems like play but BF thinks my cat is attacking his cat! I figure as long as its not a WWE type of wrestling and there is no blood drawn its ok but just keep your eye on them and when you think it gets too rough step in a redirect one or both of them with toys

What sort of meow did she make? Shorter or long and low?

It sounds like play, I just hope your cat isn't as weird as my female cat is. She's odd, she'll pounce and encourage play then complain when another cat tries to play with her. She definitely prefers to be the aggressor in play.

It sounds like play to me. And when one cat comes up to another and lowers its head, it is an invitation to groom - it means 'please lick me'. She was probably confused that Pip didn't respond!

I'd subscribe to the play theory - my cats frequently body slam/roll one another. It's hysterical to watch, especially if it involves an adult and a kitten - regardless of who's doing the rolling, the discrepancy in size makes it LOL funny.

Sounds to me like she just "mugged" him, which all 3 of our cats do to each other and to us on a regular basis.
