Excessive shedding problem

Thank God I happened onto this site. I have taken in another stray and he is shedding so bad that I don't want to keep him for that reason alone! He has been living outdoors in the neighborhood for at least a year in Texas. Since we are just getting over a hot summer, I wouldn't think this guy would be shedding so bad right now. After reading the posts here, maybe it is because he was a stray and is indoors now and getting a steady good diet of "Wellness" dry food. He also had his vaccinations, got neutered, dewormed, treated for fleas, and I gave him a "Revolution" treatment. I know that is a lot for him at once. I have 2 other cats that I took in at 3 months old that had only lived outdoors and they do not hardly shed at all. So you think this will stop once he has grown in a new healthy coat? I am trying to find him a good home and am hoping this shedding will calm down so someone will want him. Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome !! So wonderful that you have taken him in and given him a chance. I can only guess that it would more than likely get better. You have done all the right things.

Maybe brushing and adding a little fish oil supplement would help. Your vet can guide you to ones that would be good for him. I use Nordic Naturals brand recommended by my vet.

It takes time for a cat's coat to fully replace itself.

All of mine are fluffing up a bit more, including the female who usually has thin fur. As a result they're shedding a bit more and needing more brushing.

Also, not all DSH coats are the same. Some have a more fluffy undercoat and will shed more no matter what. All you can do is brush more often.
