The vet wants wants to put Swanie on a diet of this food to help him lose weight. Anyone have any opinions on whether this is a good food (I'm not wild about the ingredients), or is there something better I could substitute with to achieve the same goal. He has reached 20 pounds, it's definitely time to get serious.

Ask your vet about Ivet ( ingrediants for a RX food are IMHO good) or wysong.. ALso ask your vet what % he/ she would want in a OTC product and if they have any personal thought s on brands... And tell them why you are asking

Sorry it took so long for someone to give you some feedback

Thanks for the advice, Sharky. I looked at the iVet web site, but it looks like it's just dry food? Do they make the wet as well?

The vet wants to get a blood test for Swanie before we talk diets for him, so I'm just doing research now and trying to find good alternatives to that Royal Canin she is recommending. We had him in there on Wednesday, but he's not the easiest patient, and she couldn't get a vein in either leg to draw blood from. She didn't want to keep trying and freak him out even more, and we agreed. So, we have to take him back a week from Monday when the other vet is there, who apparently is better at getting blood from a cat who is not cooperating.

I will definitely ask her about percentages, and I plan to take a print out of the brands I've found and discuss the advantages / disadvantages of each. I don't really have much confidence in my regular vet when it comes to nutrition, but I will see what the alternate vet has to say.
