Under a pile of cats (and dogs)
Bright and early Wednesday morning here.
Or maybe not.
Sometimes it doesnt get picked up until early afternoon.
This is something that I find SO irritating! I just missed it because it's 9:15am and they usually dont come until closer to 10 (sometimes it's 8am, sometimes 1pm). It's the one day I get to sleep in and there is no way I'm getting up at 7:30 just to drag the garbage out!
The neighbor just ran out to get theirs out too. All my garbage cans don't have lids or I'd put them out the night before, but I'm afraid a dog or something would get into them and then I'd be chasing garbage all over the neighborhood.
Does anyone else have inconsistent garbage pickup too?
Argh!!

Yes and we all put our trash out around 6/7pm the night before to avoid this.

Not always possible. Especially if like the OP said there are dogs scavaging around or hoodlums kicking the bins. My problem is that I live in a windy city so even if my wheelie bin is full it can be blown over or the lid blows up and kitty litter starts flying around.

Our rubbish bin man comes between 6am-5pm. I kid you not. And isn't it ironic how when we put it out at 7.15am (deadline is 7am) they have already come, but if we put it out early I'll come home from classes and it will still be out.

Nope - we always make sure its out the night before. You need to either get up by 7am or get new containers with lids. Sorry but I don't see why you are mad and upset - you know the morning they get picked up and should be sure its out there early.

You can always go back and jump in bed you know.

Garbage pick up varies a bit on time here, too. Yesterday it was around 10:20am - I know because I was trying to get the kittens into their carrier and the truck noise on the street out front scared them - the first time any of them have ever scratched me (pretty good for semi-ferals). Other days it comes around at 8 to 12.

Our city provides dumpsters for those with alley access and large green wheeled bins for those that have to put theirs out on the curb. Does your city not offer this? If not you may just have to hunt around and get a nice sturdy bin.
At least if you do this you could probably get one (or some) that wheel out easily.

I would recommend buying some with lids that snap closed. We just have a large dumpster so we dont have to worry about it. But the Beaus runs at all times of the day too so we just have to make sure the lids are on and they are out the night before

We have to have ours out by 8 am and as with you they are not consistent about what time they pick it up.

We cannot put it out the night before because the raccoons get into it and strew it all over the place which the garbage folks will not pick up so we would have to pick up the garbage all over our property when we get home from work.

Raccoons are amazing creatures. Hubby bought a Rubbermaid seat type bin to hold our garbage and recycle bins. If you lift hard on either corner you can perhaps open it about 2-3 inches. The raccoons actually managed to do that and get into the container. The tore the garbage up, poo'd inside the bin and actually got out again. John went out and bought two fold-down locks to put on each end to keep them out.

I usually put my garbage out the night before. The only wild animals in my neighbourhood are crows! And up until last week, they have NEVER gotten into my garbage. There must of been something quite tasty in there the other day.

Garbage pick up here is usually 10am...but they have come as late as 2pm once!

I have a trash chute.

At work though it's Tuesdays, they *usually* come mid-morning so we (or rather I) have time to get trash and recycling out when I get in at 8. And I add MY recycling cos my stupid building doesn't do recycling. I need to look that up on the city's website and see if that's legal. Bugs the heck out of me.

Once in a while they come early though and so we miss it because my bosses don't put the bins out. Frustrating, yes.

We are specifically instructed to have our cans in place for pick up by 7 am, and since we are right at the beginning of the route and not far from the transfer station where they start out, we make sure it's out the night before. They've been known to come a little before 7, which irritates me, but doesn't usually matter for us. They are never later than about 9 am and that's VERY unusual.

We have wheely bins supplied by the city. They will not accept ANYTHING else. The design is pretty good, actually. They're sturdy and stable, and the lids do foil the wildlife -- except of course when some idiots insist on overfilling them, so that the lid doesn't close properly.

In our area they will not accept anything except yellow bags with the county logo on which we have to buy at our local grocery store to the tune of close to $2.00 per bag. They will not pick up anything else. The point of this I believe is to make it fair for everyone in that if your neighbour puts out 5 bags of garbage he is essentially paying close to $10.00 and if you only put out one it costs you less than $2. I don't have a problems with that essentially but with our property taxes so high one would think that included garbage pickup. Our area also does not do yard waste or large garbage (such as old furniture) pickup. We are responsible for getting those to the local landfill/garbage site ourselves.

The pick-up in my town is pretty consistent. Except they come around 5 am so putting it out that morning is not really an option for me! We are told specifically to put out the garbage cans the night before. No animals have ever gotten into my can, but the neighbor only puts out bags (no garbage can) and sometimes the cats rip them open.

It's a city-provided service, and the charge is put on our city bills. I think this works better than the free-trade system in my parents' town (they can choose their garbage pick-up service). I mean, how does the garbage guy know which houses subscribe to his service? What a pain to keep track of. And then to deal with non-payment by subscribers.

We don't currently have a home garbage service b/c we live outside of the city limits and have to pay for it. My husband owns his own company and has a dumpster, and he doesn't see the need to pay for garbage service twice, so we just take our garbage to his work. We used to have a home garbage service before he started his company, and we put our garbage out the night before b/c it was very inconsistent here also. We had one large wheeled garbage can provided by the company (that we had to pay for so we still have it) and a couple smaller cans that had pretty tight lids.

If I were you I would just get new cans with tight lids (try the lid before you buy it) and put the garbage out the night before. It wasn't a requirement on when we had to put our garbage out, and I don't recall them ever telling us what time they normally came, but I don't like to get up if I can sleep in either. I have Tuesday off and hubby takes DS to school anyway b/c I sleep in. Good luck!

I don't really know when they get picked up. A lot of the neighbors take them out at night, but you really aren't supposed to. I'm up anyway at 5:30 to go to work, so I take them out at 6:00 AM and bring them back in at 4:30 when I get home.

There are areas around here where residents really have no choice but to get up with the birds and put out the garbage in the morning. On the North Shore, near the mountains, there are bears, and no can is safe from them overnight, so it is forbidden to put it out the night before. Fortunately that does not affect us.

Yes I also have the same issue with my garbage pick up as well. My garbage pick up is on Mondays, now every month 3 out of the 4 Mondays it is picked up between 9 and 10 A.M. the other one it is picked up at 7. However you never know for sure which Monday that will be. In the winter it's not big of a deal because I can leave my garbage at the bottom of the stairs the night before and my downstairs neighbor who is up at 5 in the morning will put it out. In the summer it is a different matter because if you leave it out over night you will end up with raccoons in it or if your really unlucky a bear. It is really annoying.

There was a law put in place here, that we had to cover our garbage with these garbage nets to keep animals out.It was the most stupid idea ever, because the nets they had for people ($30 per net!) were full of holes and looked like a fishing net.Any bird or cat or dog or whatever could still get into it,either by sticking paws or snouts in or simply lifting the net.The below link is what it looked like.

http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/ph...johns-file.jpg

It was dumb.I didn't pay $30 for that,I ended up using a sheet. The sheet got wet and nasty, but it did a much better job at keeping animals out then those city nets!

The law is no longer enforced, but some people still use the nets.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Im glad I dont have that issue. We are outside the town limits so we burn our garbage any day except Sunday. Which is no big deal. I prefer to burn on days its either A) misty and wet outside and not windy at all or B) let BF do the burning so its all his fault! LOL..We recycle our glass stuff and then scrap our metal lids and cans at the scrap yard. Even at our other apt building there was just a dumpster that we threw our garbage bags into and it was emptied once a week. The only pain with that was we had to get our landlords permission to throw away any boxes or stuff like that so it wasnt too full for the other tenants. But we just threw anything big away the day the guys came and I would run it down to them and ask them to take it. They were always really good about that thankfully

Ours is Thurs. mornings.... and like most posters have already said, the timing varies.

It will be picked up anytime between 7am and 3pm. The usual is sometime in the morning, but there's no consistancy except "usually between 7-12".

This morning at 7:30, they had done the other side of the road, but ours wasn't till after noon.

We don't usually have a problem if it is set out the night before except occassionally during the summer, the crows will get it. But our norm is that DH takes it out when he leaves for work at 7:45 or so. When he's not home, I take it out the night before in the bin with lid on.

No critters seem to bother with the recycle bins.

In the winter time, we put it out the day of.... otherwise snowplows will cover it LOL.
